Former US Attorney General Pam Bondi was reportedly diagnosed with thyroid cancer shortly after President Donald Trump removed her from office. Bondi, 60, underwent treatment for the disease and is now recovering, Axios reported on Tuesday. The report also said Trump has selected Bondi to serve on the Presidential Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST), an advisory committee focused on artificial intelligence.
The former attorney general was dismissed from the Justice Department on the same day she accompanied Trump to the Supreme Court for oral arguments in a major birthright citizenship case. News of Bondi's diagnosis prompted praise and support from allies on social media.
"Pam has been quietly kicking cancer's ass the last few weeks," podcast host and former White House official Katie Miller wrote on X. "[Bondi] has a heart of gold," Miller added.
Following her departure from the Justice Department, Bondi vowed to continue supporting the president. "Leading President Trump's historic and highly successful efforts to make America safer and more secure has been the honor of a lifetime, and easily the most consequential first year of the Department of Justice in American history," Bondi posted on X last month. "I remain eternally grateful for the trust that President Trump placed in me to Make America Safe Again."
Trump has appointed Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche as interim attorney general while he considers a permanent replacement. Thyroid cancer has also affected members of Trump's inner circle before. Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner revealed in his memoir that he battled the disease while serving in the White House during Trump's first term. Kushner underwent surgery to remove a tumor from his throat while handling Middle East affairs for the administration and later had a second thyroid surgery in 2022.
