SGPGI Lucknow Achieves Landmark 200 Robotic Endocrine Procedures
The prestigious Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences in Lucknow has reached a significant milestone in advanced surgical care. On Thursday, the institute's department of endocrine surgery proudly announced the completion of 200 robotic endocrine procedures, marking a new era in minimally invasive surgical techniques.
Complex Case Highlights Surgical Advancement
Professor Gyan Chand, who leads the accomplished surgical team, revealed details of a particularly challenging case that demonstrates the department's growing expertise. The procedure involved a 25-year-old patient from Hardoi district who had been suffering from a persistent thyroid swelling accompanied by hypothyroidism for an extended period.
Medical investigations uncovered a large multinodular goitre with retrosternal extension – a condition where thyroid tissue extends behind the breastbone into the chest cavity. This presentation has traditionally been considered particularly difficult for robotic surgical approaches due to the anatomical complexity and limited access.
Successful Robotic Thyroidectomy Preserves Critical Functions
Despite the significant surgical challenges presented by this case, Professor Chand's team successfully performed a robotic total thyroidectomy, completely removing the thyroid gland while meticulously preserving vital anatomical structures. The surgical approach specifically protected the recurrent laryngeal nerves responsible for voice function and the parathyroid glands that regulate calcium levels in the body.
The patient made an excellent recovery without any postoperative complications, maintaining normal vocal capabilities and stable calcium levels throughout the healing process. The excised thyroid gland was notably enlarged, weighing 149 grams, with a substantial portion extending into the chest cavity – factors that substantially increased the surgical complexity.
Robotic Technique Avoids Traditional Large Incision
Medical experts noted that such complex cases have historically been managed through conventional open surgery, which typically requires a large neck incision. The successful application of robotic surgical technology enabled the team to avoid this extensive incision while achieving the same therapeutic outcome.
Institute Director Professor RK Dhiman extended his congratulations to the entire surgical team, describing this achievement as "a major step forward in advancing minimally invasive endocrine surgery" and recognizing the department's growing capabilities in this specialized field.
Sustained Institutional Support Enables Milestone
Professor Chand attributed this surgical milestone to the sustained institutional support and the continuously developing expertise within the endocrine surgery department. He emphasized that the growing experience with robotic techniques has expanded the department's capacity to handle increasingly complex endocrine cases that previously presented significant surgical challenges.
Medical specialists highlight that robotic surgery offers distinct advantages including enhanced surgical precision, minimal visible scarring, reduced postoperative pain, and significantly faster recovery times compared to traditional open procedures. These benefits translate to improved patient outcomes and quality of life following surgery.
Robotic Surgery Emerges as Viable Alternative
Professor Chand further commented that this achievement underscores the expanding role of robotic surgery as a practical and effective alternative to conventional open surgical procedures. The successful completion of 200 robotic endocrine cases demonstrates the department's commitment to adopting and mastering advanced surgical technologies that benefit patients across Uttar Pradesh and beyond.
The department's growing proficiency with robotic techniques reflects a broader trend in surgical innovation, where minimally invasive approaches are increasingly becoming the standard of care for complex endocrine conditions. This milestone positions SGPGI Lucknow as a leading center for advanced endocrine surgical care in Northern India.
