5-Year-Old Thalassemia Survivor Meets Stem Cell Donor in Udupi
Thalassemia survivor meets lifesaving donor in Udupi

A deeply emotional meeting unfolded in Udupi as a five-year-old thalassemia survivor came face-to-face with the stranger who saved his life through stem cell donation. The powerful reunion was organized by DATRI Blood Stem Cell Donors Registry in collaboration with PHOCON, the annual pediatric hematology conference hosted by Kasturba Hospital, Manipal.

The Life-Changing Meeting

For the first time, young Anvish Naik, diagnosed with thalassemia major, met his unrelated stem cell donor Ragapriya Sridhar. The heartfelt moment left conference participants and medical delegates visibly moved by the powerful connection between donor and recipient.

Anvish was just 16 months old when doctors diagnosed his condition after his parents noticed recurring fever, poor weight gain, and persistent lethargy. His parents described those early days as deeply disheartening, with regular blood transfusions becoming a necessary part of their child's healthcare routine.

The Journey to Recovery

Under the expert guidance of Dr. Archana MV, associate professor in the division of pediatric hematology and oncology at Kasturba Hospital, the family learned about the possibility of an unrelated stem cell transplant. Through DATRI's extensive registry, medical professionals found a suitable match, giving the Naik family renewed hope for their son's recovery.

Ragapriya Sridhar had registered as a potential donor during her college years after being inspired by a volunteer's clear explanation of the cause. She proceeded with the stem cell donation in March 2024, demonstrating remarkable commitment even while navigating her own mother's hospitalization.

"The donation process was smooth and completely safe," Ragapriya shared. "Even during such a personally challenging time, I understood this was something truly meaningful. The temporary discomfort faded quickly, but the experience gave me genuine appreciation for the strength and resilience of these young patients."

A Family's Gratitude

For Anvish's parents, meeting the woman who saved their son's life proved overwhelming. "We prayed constantly for our child's recovery," they expressed. "Meeting the person who made this miracle possible feels like receiving a divine blessing. Words cannot adequately convey the depth of our gratitude."

The donor-recipient meeting at PHOCON 2024 highlighted the extraordinary medical outcomes made possible through expert clinical care, dedicated volunteer donors, and well-coordinated transplant pathways. DATRI, India's largest blood stem cell donor registry, continues its vital mission of connecting patients with life-saving HLA-matched unrelated donors across the country.

This heartwarming story serves as a powerful reminder of how individual acts of generosity can transform lives and create unbreakable bonds between complete strangers.
