In a significant development in the case of Mamta Kafle Bhatt, a nurse and mother who vanished in Virginia in 2024, investigators have uncovered new forensic evidence. The evidence includes three human hairs, 13 human hair fragments, apparent fibers, and debris recovered from a saw. These items were examined visually and through stereo microscopy before being sent for further analysis. Court documents indicate that the three hairs may be suitable for nuclear DNA testing and have been forwarded to the Forensic Biology Section. The 13 fragments were deemed unsuitable for such testing.
Who Was Mamta Kafle Bhatt?
Mamta Kafle Bhatt, originally from Nepal, arrived in the United States in 2021. She was last seen on July 27, 2024, at UVA Health Prince William Medical Center in Manassas, Virginia, where she worked as a registered nurse in the medical surgical unit. She spoke with a friend on July 28 and posted a TikTok video with her infant daughter.
The Disappearance and Investigation
Bhatt worked at the medical center twice a week and was scheduled to work on August 1 and 2. When she failed to show up, colleagues reported her absence to the police. Officers visited her home and spoke to her husband, Naresh Bhatt, who initially declined to report her missing. Three days later, he reported her disappearance, stating he last saw her at the dinner table on July 31.
Naresh Bhatt, a former Fairfax County police recruit and U.S. Army Reserve automated logistics specialist, participated in several media interviews, urging his wife to return. He also claimed she had gone missing three times before, but never for such an extended period.
Arrest and Charges
Days later, police arrested Naresh Bhatt. The couple's infant daughter was reunited with her maternal grandparents, who traveled from Nepal. In December 2024, Bhatt was indicted on charges of first-degree murder and defiling a dead body. Despite extensive searches, Mamta's body has never been found.
The case continues to unfold as forensic experts analyze the newly discovered evidence, hoping to bring closure to this tragic mystery.
