Garhwa (Jharkhand): The body of a 20-year-old woman, who was married in March this year, was recovered from a well in Bhandar village under Dhurki police station limits on Thursday. The deceased has been identified as Shanti Devi.
Family Alleges Dowry Harassment
Family members of Shanti Devi have alleged that she was tortured and killed by her in-laws over dowry demands, and her body was dumped in the well to destroy evidence. According to her parents, soon after Shanti's marriage to Nand Lal Shah on March 14 this year, her in-laws demanded Rs 5 lakh in cash and a four-wheeler as additional dowry.
Accused Absconding
Shanti's in-laws have been absconding since the discovery of her body. Janardan Raut, the officer-in-charge of Dhurki police station, stated: “We are awaiting the postmortem examination report to ascertain whether it was a murder or a suicide.”
The incident has sparked outrage in the community, with locals demanding strict action against the perpetrators. Police have registered a case and are conducting a thorough investigation into the matter.
