Union Minister Champions Millets at Odisha's Mandia Dibasa Celebration

Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan inaugurated the Mandia Dibasa (Millet Day) celebrations in Bhubaneswar on Monday, recognizing Odisha's significant contribution to making millets a national movement.

During his inaugural address, Chouhan emphasized that Mandia Dibasa represents more than just a celebration—it symbolizes a meaningful campaign to promote Shree Anna (millets) across the country. He specifically commended the Odisha government for translating this vision into reality through effective implementation.

Nutrition and Sustainability: The Dual Benefits of Millets

The Union minister highlighted the multiple advantages of millets, describing them as symbols of nutrition, water conservation, environmental care, and sustainability. Chouhan stated, "Millets nourish both the body and the planet. Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, millets have now gained global recognition."

Chouhan called for increased awareness about the nutritional and ecological value of millets and stressed the importance of direct engagement with farmers to strengthen millet-based livelihoods. He also emphasized the need for advanced research and processing technologies to enhance millet production and consumption.

Integrating Millets into Government Schemes

The minister proposed several initiatives to promote millet consumption, including their integration into mid-day meal programs and the establishment of millet outlets in government departments. This strategic inclusion would not only improve nutritional outcomes but also create sustainable markets for millet farmers.

Chouhan particularly acknowledged the crucial role of women farmers in Odisha, stating, "Agriculture cannot progress without women. Odisha's women have moved ahead and are leading from the front in farming." This recognition highlighted the gender-inclusive approach of Odisha's agricultural development model.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who welcomed the delegates, acknowledged the successful implementation of agricultural schemes under Prime Minister Modi's guidance. He described farming as the pillar of Odisha's economy and noted the significant progress made by farmers under state government support.

"Millets, rich in nutrients, are both healthy and tasty, and through the Millet Mission, Odisha's small and women farmers are progressing rapidly," Majhi stated, underscoring the state's commitment to millet promotion as both a health initiative and an economic development strategy.

The event showcased Odisha's leadership in transforming the millet initiative from a regional program into a nationwide mission, positioning the state as a model for other regions to emulate in sustainable agricultural practices and nutritional security.
