Bihar Launches Statewide Mass Drug Administration Campaign Against Lymphatic Filariasis

Patna: The Bihar government has initiated a comprehensive statewide mass drug administration (MDA) campaign targeting lymphatic filariasis, commencing on Tuesday and scheduled to run until February 28. This extensive public health initiative will be implemented across 396 blocks in 34 districts, with the ambitious goal of protecting nearly 8.97 crore people through the supervised consumption of anti-filarial medicines.

Coordinated Action for Disease Elimination

Health Secretary Lokesh Kumar Singh emphasized that Bihar is making rapid strides toward the elimination of lymphatic filariasis, underscoring the critical importance of coordinated action across various government departments. "A key feature of this round is a statewide mega camp on February 11, which will be virtually inaugurated by Health Minister Mangal Pandey. This event aims to administer anti-filaria medicines to an impressive target of 1 crore people in a single day," Singh stated, according to an official press release.

Following the mega camp, trained teams will continue their efforts through booth-based and door-to-door activities until the campaign concludes on February 28. Authorities have stressed that the primary objective is to ensure every eligible individual consumes the medicines under the direct supervision of health workers. The press release explicitly noted that medicines will not be distributed for unsupervised use, highlighting the campaign's focus on monitored administration.

Implementation and Drug Regimens

The campaign is being executed under the leadership of Dr. Shyama Rai, the Additional Director and State Programme Officer for Filariasis. A workforce of 38,215 trained drug administrators has been mobilized to carry out this massive operation.

The drug distribution strategy involves two distinct regimens:

  • 19 Districts: Beneficiaries will receive a combination of Albendazole and DEC (Diethylcarbamazine).
  • 15 Districts: A triple-drug regimen comprising Albendazole, DEC, and Ivermectin will be administered.

All eligible individuals will receive age-appropriate doses of the medications. However, specific groups are excluded from the campaign, including children below two years of age, pregnant women, and those who are severely ill. State officials have reiterated that the medicines are safe for consumption, even for individuals with common health conditions such as hypertension and diabetes. They have also acknowledged that mild, temporary side effects like nausea or dizziness may occur in some cases.

WHO Endorsement and Public Health Significance

In a preparatory workshop held in Patna on Monday, representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO) highlighted the severe impact of lymphatic filariasis, describing it as a mosquito-borne disease that can lead to long-term disability. The WHO experts emphasized that consistent annual mass drug administration campaigns are essential for providing lasting protection and moving toward the eventual elimination of the disease.

This campaign represents a significant step in Bihar's public health strategy, leveraging large-scale coordination, trained personnel, and community engagement to combat a debilitating neglected tropical disease.
