In a decisive move to tackle the capital's deteriorating air quality, the Delhi government has mandated a significant shift in work patterns for both government and private offices. The new directive requires offices to function with only 50 percent of their staff present on-site, with the remaining half continuing their duties from home.
Proactive Measures Under GRAP-III
This critical step, announced on Monday, follows the directives issued by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM). The primary goal is twofold: to limit the exposure of Delhi's residents to harmful pollutants and to substantially reduce vehicular emissions, a major contributor to the city's smog. Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa stated that the government is proactively implementing these pollution control measures with an intensified focus on safeguarding public health.
Staggered Timings and Enforcement
Elaborating on the plan, Minister Sirsa revealed that staggered office timings have already been put into effect for all government offices, a rule that will remain enforced until February 2026. In a detailed breakdown:
- Offices under the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will operate from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM.
- Delhi government offices will function from 10:00 AM to 6:30 PM.
To ensure strict compliance with these and other pollution control protocols, the government has deployed a massive task force. Over 2,000 enforcement personnel from multiple agencies are now on the ground, conducting checks and monitoring adherence.
A Call to Private Sector and Future Steps
The advisory extends strongly to the private sector. Private offices have been urged to immediately communicate these guidelines across all their branches and implement them effectively. Minister Sirsa reaffirmed the government's commitment, adding, "The government will continue to issue all required directions to tackle air pollution and minimize its impact." This coordinated effort underscores a determined approach to mitigate the annual air quality crisis in the national capital.
