Delhi's Pollution Spike Triggers 40% Surge in Eye Drops, Mask & Nebuliser Sales
Delhi pollution drives up sales of eye drops, masks, nebulisers

The annual seasonal pollution spike in the national capital has triggered a significant surge in the sales of essential health products. Chemists across Delhi are reporting a sharp increase, estimated at 30-40%, in the demand for eye drops, face masks, and nebulisers as residents grapple with the deteriorating air quality.

Chemists Witness Unprecedented Demand

Pharmacies in various parts of the city have confirmed the rising trend. A chemist from Lajpat Nagar noted that sales of eye drops have doubled, while another from Karol Bagh reported a 40% jump in the purchase of masks and nebulisers. The demand is not limited to specific brands but is widespread across all products aimed at combating pollution-related discomfort.

The most sought-after items include lubricating eye drops, N95 and surgical masks, and nebuliser machines along with medications like levosalbutamol. This surge is directly correlated with the worsening Air Quality Index (AQI), which has frequently entered the 'very poor' and 'severe' categories in recent weeks.

Doctors Report Influx of Patients with Eye and Respiratory Issues

Parallel to the sales spike, hospitals and clinics are seeing a marked rise in patients complaining of pollution-induced ailments. Ophthalmologists are treating a high number of cases for conditions like conjunctivitis, allergic reactions, dry eyes, and irritation. Dr. JS Titiyal, chief of RP Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences at AIIMS, stated that nearly 30-40% of patients in the OPD are presenting with eye problems linked to pollution.

Similarly, pulmonologists are dealing with an increase in cases of aggravated asthma, bronchitis, and breathing difficulties. The toxic smog, laden with particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), is causing inflammation in the respiratory tract and eyes, leading to this public health crisis. Doctors strongly advise against rubbing irritated eyes, as it can cause micro-abrasions and worsen the condition.

Preventive Measures and Health Advisories

Medical professionals are reiterating crucial advice for the public during this hazardous period. The key recommendations include:

  • Minimising outdoor activities, especially during early morning and late evening hours.
  • Wearing N95 or equivalent masks consistently when outside.
  • Using prescribed lubricating eye drops to flush out irritants, but avoiding over-the-counter steroid drops without consultation.
  • Ensuring that nebulisers are used only under medical supervision and with the correct prescribed medication.
  • Staying hydrated and maintaining good indoor air quality using air purifiers where possible.

The situation underscores the severe impact of environmental pollution on daily life and public health in Delhi. While the sale of protective products offers temporary relief, experts emphasize that long-term solutions to curb air pollution are imperative. For now, the capital's residents are forced to rely on masks, eye drops, and nebulisers as their first line of defence against the toxic air.
