A 24-year-old junior resident doctor was discovered dead inside a hospital trauma center bathroom in Chandigarh on Tuesday, with syringes found near his body. The incident, suspected to be a suicide, has devastated colleagues and prompted an investigation into the source of his distress.
Details of the Incident
Dr. Yogesh Banga, a first-year postgraduate student in internal medicine at the Government Medical College in Sector 32, was found unconscious when colleagues, concerned about his prolonged absence during a shift, located him. After he failed to respond to knocks, staff forced entry into the locked cubicle. Emergency resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful.
A forensic team and police from Sector 34 discovered several syringes near the body. According to forensic investigators, a definitive cause of death will require an autopsy and toxicology verification.
Signs of Distress
Hospital sources indicated that Dr. Banga had shown signs of severe emotional distress in recent days. Investigators are now interviewing his family, fellow doctors, and hospital administrators to determine whether his distress was linked to workplace pressures or personal matters.
Dr. Banga had relocated to Chandigarh from Jalandhar three months ago to begin his residency and had moved into a campus hostel. His family has arrived in the city after being notified of his death.
Community Reaction
Colleagues described Dr. Banga as a dedicated and mild-mannered physician. For the local medical community, this unfortunate incident has exposed the heartbreaking emotional toll hidden behind a caregiver's mask. The tragedy has sparked conversations about mental health support for medical professionals.
