Mizoram TB Report 2025: 145 Deaths, 84% Cure Rate Amid HIV, MDR-TB Co-Infections
Mizoram TB: 145 deaths, 84% cured in 2025

Health officials in Mizoram have released concerning data on the state's battle against tuberculosis for the year 2025. The figures reveal a significant number of deaths alongside a high cure rate, painting a complex picture of the public health challenge.

Key Statistics: Deaths, Cures, and Co-Infections

According to officials from the National TB Elimination Programme (NTEP) under the state's national health mission, a total of 2,275 tuberculosis cases were detected in Mizoram during 2025. Tragically, at least 145 patients lost their lives to the disease. On a positive note, the health authorities achieved an 84% cure rate for patients within the same period.

The data, released on a Sunday, highlights two major complicating factors in the fight against TB. A significant number of patients, 267 individuals, were found to be co-infected with HIV. Furthermore, 146 patients were identified as suffering from the more difficult-to-treat multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB).

Demographic and Geographic Breakdown of Cases

A closer look at the cases shows that the vast majority of patients were adults. Of the total, 2,134 patients were above 14 years of age, while 141 were children below 14. The disease showed a higher prevalence among males, with 1,364 male patients compared to 911 female patients.

The burden of the disease was not evenly distributed across the state. Aizawl district recorded the highest number of infections, with a staggering 1,569 TB cases. It was followed by Lunglei district in south Mizoram with 155 cases, and Kolasib district, which borders Assam, with 138 cases.

Detection Channels and Program Implications

The report also shed light on where these cases were identified. The state's government-run hospitals were the primary detection points, accounting for 1,900 of the diagnosed cases. Meanwhile, 375 patients were identified through private and church-run hospitals, underscoring the importance of a multi-sectoral approach to disease surveillance.

These statistics from Mizoram provide a critical snapshot for the National TB Elimination Programme. The high cure rate of 84% indicates effective treatment protocols are in place. However, the number of deaths and the presence of challenging co-infections like HIV and MDR-TB signal areas that require intensified focus. The geographic concentration of cases in Aizawl suggests a need for targeted interventions in high-burden districts to further reduce mortality and achieve elimination goals.
