Punjab Health Minister's Stern Warning to Drug Manufacturers

Punjab Takes Strong Stance on Drug Quality After MP Incident

In a decisive move to safeguard public health, Punjab Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Balbir Singh has delivered a stern warning to all pharmaceutical manufacturing units operating within the state. The minister's strong message comes in the wake of a recent health incident in Madhya Pradesh connected to cough syrup consumption, highlighting the critical need for uncompromised quality control measures across the pharmaceutical sector.

High-Level Meeting Addresses Quality Concerns

The minister chaired a crucial meeting with representatives from Punjab's drug manufacturing units at Dr B R Ambedkar State Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) in Mohali on November 15, 2025. During the session, Dr Singh emphasized the necessity of implementing rigorous testing protocols at every stage of the production process. He specifically stressed that raw materials must undergo strict quality checks before manufacturing begins, while finished products, including cough syrups and other formulations, require thorough examination post-production.

Dr Singh articulated the moral imperative behind these measures, stating they are essential "in the interest of innocent children and humanity at large." He acknowledged that while Punjab has not reported any similar cases, the state cannot afford complacency and must maintain heightened vigilance to prevent any potential health crises.

Government Support with Zero Compromise on Safety

The minister reaffirmed the Bhagwant Singh Mann-led government's commitment to maintaining high healthcare standards and prioritizing public safety above all else. He declared that Punjab maintains "zero tolerance for spurious and sub-standard drugs" and urged all manufacturers to strictly comply with all prescribed norms and regulations.

During the meeting, drug manufacturers raised several concerns related to the Central Drug Authority and the Central government. In response, Dr Singh offered reassurance, stating, "The Punjab government stands with the industry. We will take up your concerns at an appropriate platform." This balanced approach demonstrates the government's intention to support legitimate business operations while ensuring public health remains protected.

To facilitate better communication and problem-solving, the minister announced that an Advisory Council has been established specifically to address industry issues. He encouraged all manufacturing units to submit their representations for discussion through this newly formed body.

The significant gathering included key officials such as FDA Commissioner Dilraj Singh, Joint Commissioner Sandeep Garg, and Jagdeep Singh, president of Drug Manufacturing Units, along with representatives from various pharmaceutical companies across Punjab, underscoring the collective commitment to drug safety and quality assurance.
