The Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) in Lucknow has established a breastfeeding kiosk at its general hospital to cater to lactating mothers visiting the outpatient department (OPD). The facility was set up on Sunday by the department of hospital administration in collaboration with the Inner Wheel Club of Lucknow Abhyudaya.
Inauguration and Future Plans
The kiosk was inaugurated by SGPGIMS director Prof Radha Krishan Dhiman, chief medical superintendent Prof Devendra Gupta, medical superintendent Prof R Harsvardhan, and other doctors. Prof Dhiman stated that the institute plans to install more such kiosks in other areas of the hospital as needed.
Study Highlights Need
The initiative was prompted by a study conducted by a postgraduate student from the department of hospital administration, which assessed the requirement for breastfeeding kiosks in OPD settings. The study revealed that 61% of lactating mothers experienced discomfort while breastfeeding in public OPD areas, while over 71% identified a private space as their top priority.
This step aims to provide a comfortable and private environment for mothers, ensuring better healthcare experiences for both them and their infants.
