Trichy: A day after the temperature in Trichy soared to 40.5 degrees Celsius, the highest recorded this season, special beds have been arranged at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) to treat patients suffering from heatstroke. Hospital sources confirmed that a total of 14 beds have been designated, with two in the red zone, four in the Intensive Medical Care Unit (IMCU), and eight in other wards.
Air-Conditioned Facilities and ORS Centres
All the beds are air-conditioned, and the hospital is well-prepared to handle heat-related cases. Additionally, approximately 20 Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) centres have been set up across the hospital to ensure proper hydration for patients. Hydration, especially the right kind, is crucial during the summer months, a source emphasized.
Public Advisory and Heatwave Warnings
Officials have urged the public to avoid non-essential travel between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., warning that the heatwave conditions are expected to intensify in the coming days. Labourers should take extra precautions and avoid direct exposure to the sun, an official advised.
Health Risks and Symptoms
Doctors have warned that prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to various health issues, including skin blisters, muscle cramps, dizziness, fainting, and heatstroke. In severe cases, excessive heat exposure may result in stroke, loss of consciousness, organ failure, and even a life-threatening coma if not treated promptly. People experiencing symptoms such as dizziness, fainting, or signs of heatstroke should seek immediate medical attention at the nearest government hospital, health officials added.
