While the widespread adoption of iodised salt dramatically reduced iodine deficiency disorders, relying on it as a sole solution for thyroid health is a dangerous misconception, especially in a country with a high prevalence of thyroid issues.

In an exclusive discussion, Dr Narendra BS, Lead Consultant – Endocrinology & Diabetology at Aster Whitefield Hospital, acknowledged the historic role of iodised salt. "For decades, iodine deficiency was a major public health issue in India, leading to conditions such as goitre," he stated. The nationwide push for iodised salt was, indeed, a landmark achievement that helped prevent thyroid disease at a population level.

However, this very success has shaped public perception in a narrow way. "Because iodised salt worked so effectively, iodine became almost synonymous with thyroid health. This created the impression that salt alone could take care of the thyroid — which is not the case," Dr Narendra explained. The thyroid is a complex, hormone-producing gland, and iodine is merely one cog in a much larger machine.

Essential Nutrients Beyond Iodine for Thyroid Function

Dr Narendra emphasised that the production, conversion, and effective use of thyroid hormones require a symphony of nutrients. This explains why some people continue to suffer from symptoms like fatigue and weight gain despite normal iodine intake and standard blood tests.

  • Selenium: Crucial for converting thyroid hormone into its active form.
  • Iron: Essential for the hormone production process itself. Iron deficiency is common in thyroid patients, often leading to co-existing anaemia.
  • Zinc: Supports hormone synthesis and regulation.
  • Adequate Protein: Necessary to transport thyroid hormones through the bloodstream.

"Without these minerals and proteins, thyroid abnormalities can persist despite sufficient iodine intake," he cautioned.

How Diet, Stress, and Sleep Impact Your Thyroid

Daily lifestyle choices exert a powerful, often underestimated, influence on thyroid function. Dr Narendra warned that very restrictive diets, meal-skipping, or eliminating entire food groups can place undue stress on the gland. Conversely, diets high in ultra-processed foods promote inflammation and metabolic disruption, indirectly impairing thyroid health.

Furthermore, chronic stress and poor sleep are frequently overlooked culprits. "High stress hormone levels and inadequate sleep can interfere with how thyroid hormones are converted and used in the body," Dr Narendra said. This mismatch can lead to persistent symptoms even when lab reports appear normal.

He also cautioned against self-medicating with iodised salt for ongoing issues like tiredness or unexplained weight gain. "In reality, these symptoms are more commonly linked to thyroid dysfunction, often autoimmune in nature, which requires proper medical evaluation and treatment," he advised.

The core message from experts this Thyroid Awareness Month is clear: iodised salt is a preventive foundation, not a cure. "It helps prevent iodine deficiency, but it cannot correct nutritional deficiencies, lifestyle stress, sleep problems, or undiagnosed thyroid disease," Dr Narendra concluded.
