Lucknow: Practicing meditation before surgery can significantly reduce anxiety, improve heart rate, and ensure blood pressure stability in patients undergoing treatment for varicose veins, according to a joint study by Lucknow University (LU) and King George’s Medical University (KGMU).
Understanding Varicose Veins
Varicose veins are swollen, twisted, and enlarged veins that typically appear just under the skin in the legs and feet. This condition can cause discomfort and lead to more serious health issues if left untreated.
Study Methodology
The study was conducted by assistant professor at LU’s department of yoga and alternative medicine, Amarjeet Yadav; professor in the department of anaesthesiology and critical care at KGMU, Dr. Rajni Gupta; and MD resident Chaitanya Gahlot. It involved 60 patients aged between 25 and 60 years who were scheduled for endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) for varicose veins.
Participants were divided into two groups. One group practiced meditation for a week before surgery, while the other received standard surgical care, said Dr. Gupta.
Key Findings
The patients who practiced meditation reported lower levels of anxiety both before and after surgery, along with better vital parameters such as heart rate and blood pressure. This suggests that incorporating meditation into preoperative care can enhance patient outcomes.
Implications for Patient Care
These findings highlight the potential benefits of integrating mind-body practices into surgical protocols. By reducing anxiety and stabilizing physiological measures, meditation may contribute to smoother surgical experiences and faster recovery.
