In a heartwarming display of community service, an autorickshaw driver in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district has become a beacon of hope for impoverished and ailing patients traveling to a major hospital. Binod Lohar, 37, voluntarily ferries those in need to the Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College and Hospital free of charge, dedicating precious hours of his working day to this noble cause.
A Compassionate Response to Human Suffering
The genesis of Lohar's service lies in a poignant encounter earlier this year. While returning home one night after dropping a passenger at the bustling Baripada bus stand, he noticed a frail elderly woman walking with her granddaughter towards the hospital. Upon inquiry, he learned they had only 200 rupees and could not spare any for transport. Deeply moved, Lohar insisted on driving them without charge. This incident sparked a mission. For the last three months, he has made this voluntary service a daily ritual.
Lohar was tired of witnessing the struggle of poor patients and parents carrying sick children, forced to walk the distance from the bus stand because they couldn't afford a ride. "I decided I had to do something," he explained, reflecting on the hardship he routinely observed.
The Mechanics of a Selfless Service
Lohar has systematized his generosity to ensure it is sustainable alongside his livelihood. His free service operates during two specific windows: from 11 am to 1 pm and for an hour after 4 pm each day. During the morning slot alone, he completes at least four complimentary trips to the hospital. He has made special provisions for the differently-abled, offering them free rides at any time of the day.
To spread awareness, he has put up a poster behind his auto and has even written his mobile number inside the vehicle for people to contact him. Interestingly, he often has to convince hesitant beneficiaries in the morning, as many arriving from across the district are unaware of his offer. "But in the evening, when people are returning from the hospital, it is easier to spot them," Lohar noted. For the remainder of the day, he works like any other auto driver, charging passengers to earn his living.
Service Extends Beyond the Auto Rickshaw
Binod Lohar's commitment to social welfare is not confined to providing free auto rides. He is also a regular blood donor. Furthermore, he assists poor patients who need to be referred to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack by helping them arrange free or affordable ambulance services. His actions embody a holistic approach to community support, addressing multiple layers of need within the healthcare ecosystem of the region.
This story from Baripada stands as a powerful testament to how individual initiative can directly alleviate suffering. Binod Lohar, with his simple auto rickshaw, is driving more than just passengers; he is driving change, one free ride at a time.
