Mysuru, widely recognized as the yoga hub of Karnataka, is making comprehensive preparations to celebrate the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY) on June 21. On Sunday morning, various yoga organizations, teachers, and practitioners convened to observe Sankalp Divas, a day of collective resolve. During this meeting, participants unanimously agreed to work together to boost public participation by encouraging yoga practice throughout the city.
Theme and Key Events
This year's theme for the International Day of Yoga is 'Yoga for Wellness, Wisdom, and World Peace'. It was also decided to observe Maha Sankalp Divas on May 31 in front of the historic Mysore Palace, where the protocol yoga will be performed en masse. Organizers have urged all yoga institutions and instructors to reach out to more people and institutions in the run-up to IDY 2026. The city plans to host yoga sessions at 120 different venues, with trainers being encouraged to start protocol yoga sessions for their students well in advance.
Main Event and Participation Target
Mysuru Yoga Federation president Srihari Dwarkanath announced that the main event will be held in front of the palace on June 21. 'Our target is to have 1.2 lakh people perform yoga across 120 venues in the city,' he said. This ambitious goal reflects the city's commitment to promoting yoga as a tool for physical and mental well-being.
Participating Organizations
Representatives from several key yoga bodies took part in the Sankalp Divas event, including the Yoga Federation of Mysore, Mysore Yoga Okkuta, Shri Pathanjali Yoga Shikshana Samiti (SPYSS), GSS Yoga, Yoga Sports Foundation, and Bharat Swabhiman Trust. Notable attendees included BP Murthy, working president of Mysore Yoga Okkuta, and KG Devaraj, president of the Okkuta, along with many other yoga enthusiasts and leaders.
The collective effort underscores the unity and dedication of Mysuru's yoga community in spreading the benefits of yoga to every corner of the city. With detailed planning and widespread outreach, Mysuru is set to make the 12th International Day of Yoga a resounding success.
