Over the years, Selena Gomez has been candid about her journey with lupus, an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation and damage to various organs and tissues. In a recent interview, the singer and actress disclosed that the condition has led to several complications, including arthritis. To manage this challenge, Gomez revealed that she ensured the packaging of her beauty products was designed for easy access.
Selena Gomez Lupus Arthritis Influences Brand Packaging
Last year, during an appearance on the podcast 'Good Hang with Amy Poehler', Gomez opened up about the struggles she faces due to lupus, which subsequently affected the production of her beauty brand. For the past few years, the star has been running her own cosmetics company. On the podcast, she shared that she suffers from arthritis as a result of lupus, severely impacting her daily life. She also revealed that this condition influenced the design of her brand's packaging to make it more convenient.
Gomez explained, "So, I remember before the brand, I was trying to open a water bottle and it hurt really bad before I was on the right medication. And we somehow inherently made the products easy to open, and then we realized, wait — they kind of have to be that way. And then we started to make every product with the intention of [working for] anybody who [has] dexterity problems." She emphasized that accessibility is extremely important to her, and she aims to make her products as easy and accessible as possible for people of all ages.
Understanding Lupus
According to the Cleveland Clinic, lupus is an autoimmune disease where the immune system damages organs and tissues throughout the body. It causes inflammation that can affect the skin, joints, blood, and organs such as the kidneys, lungs, and heart. A healthcare provider can help manage symptoms and reduce flare-ups with appropriate medications.
Gomez has been open about her lupus journey and actively takes medication to control the condition. Her commitment to inclusivity in her brand reflects her personal experiences and desire to help others facing similar challenges.
