Ayodhya Museum to Receive Historic 200-Year-Old Ramcharitmanas Manuscript

In a significant development for cultural preservation, the International Ram Katha Museum in Ayodhya is set to acquire an exceptionally rare manuscript of the Ramcharitmanas, estimated to be over two centuries old and written in the ancient Nagari script. This acquisition follows a recent public appeal by the museum for donations of rare Ramayan manuscripts in Sanskrit and various Indian languages.

Generous Donation from Local Resident

Responding to the museum's call, a resident of Ayodhya has come forward to donate this precious Nagari script manuscript, which dates back approximately 200 years. Museum director Sanjib Kumar Singh provided detailed insights into the manuscript's historical significance, noting its distinct paleographic characteristics.

"The script, which evolved from Nagari to Devanagari, exhibits noticeable differences in letter formation compared to contemporary writing," Singh explained. "Older letters feature open bases with attached vowel marks, whereas modern letters are formed differently. Based on these distinctive features, I can confidently state this manuscript is approximately 200 years old."

National Response to Manuscript Collection Drive

The museum's initiative has sparked widespread interest across India, with numerous individuals and institutions expressing willingness to contribute rare manuscripts. "Similarly, several people from Gujarat, Assam, and Rajasthan have shown interest in sharing their rare manuscripts with us," Singh revealed. "Even members of the Tai tribe near Myanmar have approached us regarding donations of rare Ramayan manuscripts."

This growing collection forms part of a broader mission to establish a comprehensive national repository dedicated to preserving Ramayan manuscripts. The museum has extended invitations to individual scholars, traditional families, ashrams, mutts, libraries, universities, government institutions, trusts, and private collectors nationwide to contribute to this important cultural endeavor.

Comprehensive Manuscript Collection Scope

The museum's collection aims to encompass diverse Ramayan-related materials beyond the Valmiki Ramayan itself. The repository will include:

  • Regional recensions and versions of the epic
  • Scholarly commentaries and ancillary texts
  • Illustrated manuscripts created on palm leaf or paper

"We have secured approval to establish a conservation center at the International Ram Katha Museum within the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra," Singh announced. "We encourage contributions of original, authentic manuscripts for preservation, display, and research purposes to safeguard our invaluable cultural heritage for future generations."

Expert Panel for Manuscript Assessment

To ensure proper evaluation and authentication of donated manuscripts, the museum has formed a specialized panel comprising distinguished experts. This committee includes the vice-chancellor of the Central Sanskrit University, former head of the manuscript department Satyavrat Tripathi, and the director of the National Manuscript Mission.
