India's Remarkable Endemic Flowers
India is recognised as one of the world's megadiverse countries, home to an extraordinary range of ecosystems that support thousands of plant species. From the misty slopes of the Western Ghats to the remote hills of the Northeast, several flowers have evolved in isolation over centuries, adapting to highly specific climatic and geographical conditions. The result is a remarkable collection of endemic blooms that exist nowhere else in the wild. Here are five of the most remarkable examples of flowers that are unique to India.
Shirui Lily
There are few flowers as distinctive of a particular place as the Shirui Lily in Manipur. It grows only in the Shirui Hills in Ukhrul district and only flowers from late May till early June, when its slopes come alive with its pale pink blossoms. The Shirui Lily was discovered in the wilds of Manipur in 1946 by British botanist Frank Kingdon-Ward and named Lilium mackliniae in honor of his wife, Jean Macklin. Later, the flower became widely renowned after winning prizes at the Royal Horticultural Society Flower Show in London. Where: Shirui Hills, Manipur.
Neelakurinji
One of the best-known flowering phenomena in India is the Neelakurinji. The plant, which covers certain areas of the Western Ghats in shades of blue and purple, only blooms once every 12 years. Flowering of this plant on a massive scale is an unusual natural phenomenon called gregarious flowering, which is followed by seed formation and life cycle completion. The last time it flowered was in 2018, while the next flowering will occur in 2030 in several places. Where: Western Ghats in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
Nilgiri Lily
Among the rare endemic lilies of India, there is the Nilgiri Lily. As its name suggests, it is endemic to the Nilgiri Hills and bears large trumpet-shaped flowers. It grows in the montane grasslands of the Southern Western Ghats. Degradation and alterations of its habitat have caused its population to become endangered, making this plant rare to encounter. Nevertheless, for botanists, it is one of the most important endemic flowers in India. Where: Nilgiri Hills, Tamil Nadu.
Frerea indica
While traditional flowers are well-known, this unique flower amazes people with its succulent stems and star-like maroon blooms. It belongs to the dogbane family and naturally grows in rocky areas of the northern Western Ghats. It was once presumed extinct until the plant was rediscovered in recent times. Today, it is considered one of India's most unusual endemic plants and is of significant conservation interest. Where: Western Ghats of Maharashtra.
Paphiopedilum druryi
This orchid is one of the rarest orchids in India. Known for its characteristic pouch-like flowers, the species was believed to have become extinct in the wild until it was rediscovered in the Western Ghats. Because of its beauty, the species is highly targeted by collectors, making conservation all the more difficult. The rediscovery of the orchid can be counted as one of the greatest botanical discoveries related to India's endemic flora. Where: Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
