Ahmedabad Teenager Vansh Patel to Embrace Jain Monkhood in Palitana

In a significant spiritual decision, 15-year-old Vansh Patel from Ahmedabad is set to take diksha, formally embracing Jain monkhood, in Palitana on April 23. This event marks a profound personal journey for the teenager, who comes from a unique inter-faith family background.

Family Background and Religious Upbringing

Vansh is the only child of Praful Patel, 44, who belongs to the Patidar community, and Vaishali Patel, 43, who is a Jain. His parents have fostered an environment of mutual respect for both religions throughout his upbringing. "Being a child of an inter-faith couple, we ensured he understood and respected both faiths," Vaishali explained.

She shared that from a young age, Vansh was exposed to Jain traditions, such as listening to the Adinath Dada Stavan as a bedtime lullaby and learning core values like non-violence. Simultaneously, the family celebrated Hindu festivals, including installing a Ganpati idol at home and observing the 10-day Ganpati festival annually.

"We also ensured he visited the Umiya temple in Unjha four times a year while continuing to worship at Jain temples and perform rituals," Vaishali added, highlighting their balanced approach to religious practices.

Educational and Spiritual Influences

Vansh studied until Class 9 at Amrit Jyoti School in Ahmedabad. His path toward monkhood was shaped by a series of impactful experiences that gradually steered him toward renouncing worldly life.

In 2016, a Sadhvi Maharaj inspired him to stop bursting firecrackers during Diwali, a decision he made immediately. Impressed by his dedication, she later cast him in a lead role in a Jain play where the character prioritizes religion over personal needs. This experience deepened his engagement with Jainism, leading him to observe various fasts.

A pivotal moment occurred in January of last year during a school trip to the Velavadar sanctuary. Witnessing wildlife struggle for food and water, and roaming in search of survival, deeply moved Vansh and solidified his resolve to renounce the material world.

Family's Evolving Spiritual Journey

Praful Patel, Vansh's father, has also increasingly adopted Jain practices in recent years. He is currently observing the Varshi Tap, a significant Jain fast. "Over the last three years, my faith in religion has deepened. Earlier I did not even know the Navkar Mantra, but I learnt it while following Jain rituals," Praful stated, reflecting the family's collective spiritual growth.

This story underscores how inter-faith families can nurture profound spiritual paths, with Vansh's decision to become a Jain monk serving as a testament to the values instilled by his parents and his own transformative experiences.
