Prayagraj's Historic All Saints Cathedral to Get Rs 9 Crore Revamp
All Saints Cathedral, Prayagraj, set for Rs 9 crore beautification

The historic All Saints Cathedral, a landmark of Prayagraj's Civil Lines area, is poised for a significant transformation. The Prayagraj Municipal Corporation (PMC) has finalized an extensive beautification plan aimed at restoring the grandeur of this iconic structure, commonly known as Patthar Girjaghar.

A Gothic Masterpiece Gets a New Lease of Life

Modelled after the 13th-century Gothic architectural style, the cathedral stands as a prime example of Gothic Revival buildings constructed during the British era. Its design is credited to the renowned British architect Sir William Emerson, the mind behind Kolkata's Victoria Memorial. Emerson designed the cathedral in 1871, it was consecrated in 1887, and construction was fully completed in 1891.

The new PMC initiative seeks to enhance both the aesthetic appeal and visitor experience of this heritage site. A key feature of the plan is the installation of sophisticated façade lighting to illuminate the church and its surroundings beautifully after dusk.

Comprehensive Amenities for Visitors and Locals

The beautification project is comprehensive, focusing on infrastructure and public convenience. The existing railings encircling the cathedral will be replaced, and the entire campus will be upgraded with pedestrian-friendly pathways. To address a common urban issue, a dedicated parking facility will be developed within the premises.

Recognizing modern tourism trends, the PMC will also set up a designated selfie point to attract both tourists and city residents. For public comfort, a kiosk serving light refreshments will be established inside the campus. Additional amenities include:

  • Construction of new footpaths for smooth pedestrian movement.
  • Installation of benches around the campus for visitors.
  • Placement of attractive structures near the new railings.
  • Repair and upgrade of existing toilet facilities.

Project Timeline, Funding, and Broader Vision

Municipal officials have stated that the beautification work is expected to be completed within one year. The estimated expenditure for this heritage revival project is Rs 9 crore.

The project will be financed under the state government's Global City Scheme. The municipal corporation has already received the necessary budgetary approval. A detailed project report (DPR) has been prepared, and the civic body is now preparing to invite tenders to execute the proposed works.

PMC executive engineer Anil Maurya confirmed that the proposal, which also includes plans for a literary park and the renovation of the municipal zonal office at Khuldabad under the same scheme, was submitted and approved by the government, leading to the release of funds.

Civic officials emphasize that this initiative serves a dual purpose: conserving the city's rich architectural heritage while simultaneously improving public amenities and boosting tourism potential. The revival of All Saints Cathedral is seen as a crucial step in enhancing Prayagraj's cultural landscape and visitor appeal.
