Ardh Kumbh 2025: Mandatory ID Cards for Seers to Stop Fake Sadhus

Haridwar Ardh Kumbh 2025 to Implement Strict Identity Verification for Seers

In a significant move to preserve the sanctity of the upcoming religious gathering, the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad (ABAP) has announced that seers will be permitted entry to next year's Ardh Kumbh in Haridwar only with official identity cards issued by their respective akharas and ashrams. This decision, revealed by ABAP president Swami Ravindra Puri on Thursday, aims to decisively prevent 'fake sadhus' from infiltrating the event and tarnishing the community's reputation.

Cracking Down on Imposters to Protect Hindu Sentiments

Swami Ravindra Puri emphasized that the presence of fraudulent sadhus not only damages the image of the genuine ascetic community but also deeply hurts Hindu religious sentiments. He called for robust support from both the public and the various akharas to ensure the successful implementation of this verification system. "We may seek assistance from the administration and police to ensure compliance with this rule," Puri stated, highlighting the potential for official enforcement.

Furthermore, Puri indicated that in addition to the akhara-issued ID cards, seers might also be required to present their Aadhaar cards as supplementary proof of identity. This layered approach is designed to create a more foolproof barrier against impersonators. He urged all akharas to proactively issue identification cards to their members and affiliated sadhus well in advance of the Ardh Kumbh.

Addressing Broader Issues Within the Community

The call for stricter verification has sparked related discussions about internal reforms. Shambhavi Peethadhishwar Swami Anand Swaroop urged akharas to first address the proliferation of self-proclaimed spiritual leaders. He specifically called for curbing the unauthorized creation of fake jagadgurus and mahamandaleshwars, suggesting that this is a root cause of the credibility issue.

Swami Anand Swaroop further appealed to the chatushpeeth committee, comprising the four Shankaracharyas, to take a more active role. He proposed that this authoritative body should assume responsibility for supervising and overseeing the arrangements and conduct during both Kumbh and Ardh Kumbh events, ensuring greater accountability and order.

Existing Practices and Official Response

Providing context, Mahaniwani Akhara secretary Swami Ravindra Puri, who leads another faction of the ABAP, clarified from Ayodhya that identity cards are routinely issued to all sadhus of an akhara during each Kumbh or Ardh Kumbh. This practice, he noted, is not entirely new but will now be enforced more strictly and uniformly.

On the potential for police involvement, SP city Abhay Kumar Singh commented that he had not yet formally reviewed Swami Ravindra Puri's statement. However, he added, "If and when he comes forward with a concrete proposal requesting police assistance, it would be duly considered by the authorities." This indicates a willingness from law enforcement to collaborate, pending an official request.

The collective effort underscores a determined push by religious authorities to safeguard the integrity of one of Hinduism's largest pilgrimages, ensuring that only genuine seers participate in the sacred Ardh Kumbh of 2025.
