Artists Honor Birju Maharaj with Kathak on Death Anniversary

Artists gathered in Lucknow on Sunday to honor the legendary Pandit Birju Maharaj on his fourth death anniversary. They performed heartfelt tributes at the historic Kalka Bindadeen Deori venue. The Uttar Pradesh culture department organized this special program to celebrate the maestro's legacy.

Preserving the Lucknow Gharana

Ram Mohan Maharaj, a Kathak dancer and brother of Birju Maharaj, shared his thoughts during the event. He emphasized Birju Maharaj's lifelong wish. "Birju Maharaj always wanted more people to learn the unique Kathak of the Lucknow gharana," he said. "I am working hard to attract young people to our traditional dance form instead of them chasing western styles."

A Series of Captivating Performances

The program opened with a moving 'Guru Vandana'. Artists performed a rhythmic composition called 'Natwari' to start the tribute. Next, they presented a thumri titled 'meri suno shyam'. Birju Maharaj himself wrote this beautiful piece.

The third performance showcased the magic of Kathak using tarana and teentaal rhythms. For the final act, artists performed another thumri. Each piece highlighted the depth and beauty of the Lucknow gharana.

Emotional Moments for Performers

Artist Rini Bharadwaj expressed her gratitude after performing. "I feel very fortunate to perform where Kathak maestros once danced and practiced," she said. Her words reflected the deep respect artists hold for this sacred space.

Promoting Traditional Dance Forms

Dhananjay Singh, the incharge of Kalka Bindadeen Deori, spoke about the program's importance. "Such events actively promote the Lucknow Kathak gharana," he stated. The venue itself holds historical significance for Kathak enthusiasts.

The tribute successfully brought together artists and audiences to remember Pandit Birju Maharaj. It reinforced the need to preserve India's rich cultural heritage for future generations.
