Avaniyapuram Jallikattu Marks Grand Start to Pongal Celebrations
The festive spirit of Pongal ignited in Madurai district on Thursday as the Avaniyapuram jallikattu event unfolded with great enthusiasm. This traditional bull-taming spectacle, the first of three key events during the harvest festival, drew large crowds and showcased both skill and bravery.
Spectators Cheer as Tamers Face the Bulls
Excited spectators filled the galleries on both sides of the arena, cheering loudly as bull tamers attempted to tame the powerful animals. Police personnel worked diligently to ensure everyone stayed safely behind the barricades, maintaining order throughout the event.
Rigorous Checks and Impressive Participation
Out of 909 registered tamers, authorities found 561 eligible to participate. For the bulls, 1,186 registrations led to 986 undergoing veterinary checks. Of these, 939 bulls were deemed fit for the event, while 47 faced disqualification.
Winners Take Home Coveted Prizes
Balamurugan from Valayankulam emerged as the top bull tamer, securing first place by taming an impressive 22 bulls. His reward was a brand-new car. Karthik of Avaniyapuram took second place after taming 17 bulls, earning a two-wheeler.
In the best bull category, the bull owned by the Virumandi brothers claimed the top spot, with its owner receiving a tractor as a prize. G R Karthik's bull secured second place, winning a gold coin.
Digital Scoreboard Enhances Transparency
For the first time ever, organizers set up a digital scoreboard at the arena for public viewing. This innovation aimed to bring greater transparency to the process of selecting the best bull tamers and bulls, allowing spectators to follow the action clearly.
Minor Injuries Reported
As many as 60 people, including tamers, sustained minor injuries during the event. Out of these, eight individuals required further treatment and were referred to the Government Rajaji Hospital.
The Avaniyapuram jallikattu successfully set the tone for the upcoming events, blending tradition with modern touches like the digital display.
