Bhartendu Natya Akademi Completes Major Rs 22 Crore Renovation Project
In a significant boost to performing arts education in Uttar Pradesh, the Bhartendu Natya Akademi in Lucknow has unveiled a comprehensive infrastructure upgrade worth Rs 22 crore. The extensive renovation project has transformed the institution's facilities with advanced technology and modern amenities, positioning it as a premier center for theatre training and performances.
State-of-the-Art Auditorium Enhancements
The academy's two main performance venues—the Thrust Auditorium and BM Shah Auditorium—have undergone complete technological overhauls. Both spaces now feature cutting-edge light and sound systems specifically designed to support contemporary stage productions. The Thrust Auditorium maintains a seating capacity of 152, while the BM Shah Auditorium accommodates 137 audience members.
Key improvements to the auditoriums include:
- Advanced acoustic treatments for superior sound quality
- Enhanced stage visibility through strategic lighting redesign
- Modern technical control systems for seamless production management
- New carpeting and floor lighting to improve audience viewing experience
- Dolby Atmos sound systems and premium speakers for immersive audio
Each auditorium now includes dedicated green rooms for performers, providing comfortable preparation spaces adjacent to the stages. The stage areas themselves have been redesigned to accommodate modern theatre equipment and technical requirements.
Comprehensive Campus Modernization
Beyond the performance spaces, the entire campus has received substantial upgrades. A new cafeteria has been constructed adjacent to the auditoriums, providing convenient dining options for students, faculty, and visitors. Accessibility has been improved with the installation of a new lift, while multiple water coolers have been strategically placed throughout the facility.
The parking infrastructure has been significantly expanded, with a newly developed parking area capable of accommodating at least 150 vehicles. This addresses previous logistical challenges and makes the institution more accessible to larger audiences.
Enhanced Educational Facilities
The academy's educational infrastructure has received parallel attention, with multiple classrooms undergoing complete modernization. Several learning spaces are now air-conditioned and equipped with video projectors, enabling faculty to incorporate multimedia presentations, recorded performances, and digital stage design references directly into their teaching.
A dedicated rehearsal room has been created specifically for students, featuring an improved sound system and mirrors on all walls to facilitate movement training and performance practice. These enhancements allow students to study and rehearse in professional-grade environments that mirror contemporary theatre production standards.
Future Development Plans
Bhartendu Natya Akademi Chairman Rati Shankar Tripathi revealed that additional improvements are already underway. "We are currently renovating the terrace theatre of our main building to create an open-air performance space," Tripathi explained. "This will provide audiences with a unique outdoor theatre experience, and construction is scheduled for completion by the end of this month."
The comprehensive renovation represents a substantial investment in Uttar Pradesh's cultural infrastructure and demonstrates the state government's commitment to supporting performing arts education. By combining traditional theatre training with modern technological capabilities, the upgraded Bhartendu Natya Akademi aims to produce the next generation of theatre professionals equipped to excel in both classical and contemporary performance traditions.
