Chennai Zoo Boosts Infrastructure for Anticipated Summer Visitor Surge
As Chennai prepares for the peak of summer, the sprawling 430-hectare Arignar Anna Zoological Park in Vandalur is undertaking significant upgrades to its visitor infrastructure and animal habitats. The zoo management is proactively enhancing amenities to ensure a comfortable experience for the large crowds expected during the upcoming holiday season.
Enhanced Visitor Comfort and New Facilities
Key improvements include the resurfacing of internal roads, the renovation of existing rest sheds, and the addition of new shaded areas to provide relief from the intense heat. Lush public gardens have been transformed into cool, shaded oases strategically placed near animal exhibits. A notable new addition is a specially designed room for lactating mothers, which is already operational alongside the upgraded rest sheds.
"Work on black-topping the roads is in progress and will be completed soon," stated Deputy Director Manish Meena. "We are focused on ensuring every visit is comfortable and memorable."
Projected Increase in Footfall
The zoo typically attracts around 4,000 visitors on weekdays, with numbers doubling to approximately 8,000 on weekends. During the summer holidays, weekend crowds are predicted to potentially triple, reaching up to 12,000 visitors. Historical data supports this trend: visitor numbers in April-May 2024 reached 2.80 lakh, up from 3.20 lakh the previous year, indicating a consistent annual increase during the summer period.
Animal Enrichment Initiatives
Beyond visitor amenities, the zoo has implemented several enrichment programs to enhance the well-being of its captive wildlife. Baboons now have access to elevated wooden-plank feeding platforms, while primates such as lion-tailed macaques, Nilgiri langurs, and common langurs enjoy new swings and similar interactive setups.
"The newly arrived Himalayan black bears were provided a wooden cot-like structure to slide and play," Meena explained. "This will be an added attraction for visitors this summer."
Future Additions and Arrivals
The park is also anticipating new arrivals through a central zoo authority-approved exchange program. Notably, the zoo is awaiting the arrival of pure-bred Asiatic lions from Sakkarbaug Zoo in Gujarat. These additions, along with expected avian species, promise to offer further delights for visitors during the season, according to zoo managers.
These comprehensive preparations underscore the zoo's commitment to accommodating growing visitor interest while prioritizing both guest comfort and animal welfare during the challenging summer months.
