Chinese Film Festival Makes Long-Awaited Return to Kolkata After Ten-Year Hiatus

The vibrant city of Kolkata is set to host a significant cultural resurgence as the Chinese Film Festival prepares to return after a full decade. This eagerly anticipated event, last held in 2016, will be complemented by the debut celebration of International Chinese Language Day in the city. Both initiatives are being organized by the Chinese Consulate in Kolkata, marking a substantial boost to Sino-Indian cultural diplomacy in Eastern India.

Three-Day Cinematic Celebration at Nandan

The three-day film festival, organized in association with Nandan, the West Bengal Film Centre, is scheduled to commence on April 17, 2026. The opening ceremony will take place at 6:30 PM at Nandal I. Xu Wei, the Chinese Consul General in Kolkata, expressed enthusiasm about the festival's return during an announcement on Friday.

"Many of my Indian friends have consistently expressed admiration for the works of renowned Chinese directors such as Zhang Yimou, Chen Kaige, Wong Kar-Wai, and Jia Zhangke, which remain popular here," stated Consul General Xu Wei. "The China Film Archive, in collaboration with Nandan, is proud to host the 2026 Kolkata China Film Festival from April 17 to 19, reviving a cherished cultural tradition."

International Chinese Language Day Debuts in Kolkata

Following the film festival, Kolkata will witness its first-ever International Chinese Language Day celebration on April 20. This event will be held at Modern High School for Girls, organized in collaboration with the School of World Languages and St Joan's School.

The United Nations designated this day in 2010, aligning it with Guyu (Grain Rain), a significant solar term in the Chinese lunar calendar, to promote Chinese language education and cultural exchange globally. "It has been immensely gratifying to observe the growing interest in Chinese language learning across India," noted Consul General Xu Wei. "Numerous educational institutions have shown keen interest in incorporating Chinese language courses into their curricula."

Immersive Cultural Experiences and Student Performances

The International Chinese Language Day celebration promises to be a multifaceted cultural extravaganza, featuring:

  • Performances by students from various city schools, including Chinese songs, traditional dances, and poetry recitations
  • Over ten cultural experience stalls organized by the consulate, offering hands-on activities
  • Traditional Chinese arts demonstrations such as calligraphy, intricate paper cutting, and ceremonial tea preparation
  • Physical wellness activities including Baduanjin (a traditional Qigong form) and shuttlecock kicking
  • Creative workshops like traditional lantern making

These activities will commence at 10:00 AM on April 20, providing Kolkata residents with an immersive introduction to Chinese culture.

Enhanced Connectivity: Direct Flight Resumption Announced

In a related development that strengthens Kolkata's ties with China, Consul General Xu Wei announced that China Eastern Airlines will resume direct flights between Kolkata and Kunming starting April 18. These sister cities have maintained their partnership since 2013, and the renewed air connectivity is expected to facilitate increased cultural, educational, and economic exchanges between the two regions.

This comprehensive series of events represents a significant revitalization of cultural diplomacy between China and Eastern India, with Kolkata serving as the focal point for cinematic appreciation, linguistic education, and people-to-people connections that bridge the two ancient civilizations.
