Delhi Holiday: Schools, Offices Closed on Nov 25

The Delhi Government has officially declared Tuesday, November 25, a public holiday across the national capital. This decision marks the commemoration of the 350th Shaheedi Diwas of Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib, the ninth Sikh Guru. The day, which was previously categorized as a restricted holiday, has been elevated to a full public holiday, leading to the closure of government offices and educational institutions.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta made the announcement through a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). She expressed her reverence, stating, "May Guru Sahib’s timeless message of courage, compassion, and freedom of faith continue to guide and inspire us in our collective journey ahead." The Chief Minister also extended a warm invitation to Delhi's residents and people from across India to participate in the grand three-day event honouring the Guru's martyrdom, scheduled from November 23 to 25 at the historic Red Fort.

Significance of Shaheedi Diwas

Shaheedi Diwas is observed to honour the supreme sacrifice of Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru. He was executed on the orders of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in the year 1675 in Delhi. His martyrdom is a profound chapter in Indian history, symbolizing the defence of religious freedom and the right to practice one's faith without persecution.

Special Arrangements for Devotees

To facilitate pilgrims and devotees wishing to pay their respects, the Indian Railways has initiated special measures. It announced the operation of two special train services for devotees. One service originates from Patna Sahib and the other from Old Delhi. These special trains began their journey on Saturday, November 22, ensuring seamless travel for those attending the commemorative events.

The elevation of this day to a public holiday underscores the enduring legacy and respect for Guru Tegh Bahadur's sacrifice, allowing a wider community to reflect on his message of courage and universal brotherhood.
