Beyond Beaches: Goa's Susegad Philosophy Reveals True Path to Happiness
Goa has long been celebrated as India's ultimate laid-back paradise—a destination where time seems to slow, worries dissolve, and life moves in harmony with the sea's gentle rhythm. However, beneath the familiar postcard images of sun-kissed beaches and golden sunsets lies a deeper, often misunderstood cultural philosophy that locals proudly call susegad. Far from representing laziness or idleness, susegad embodies a mindful approach to living that prioritizes balance, intentional pauses, and the quiet joy found in everyday moments.
On the occasion of the International Day of Happiness, we engaged with Goans across various ages and professions to uncover what genuine happiness means within this unique coastal context. From chess games on the sand to creative pursuits on traditional balcaos, Goans demonstrate a masterful ability to slow down and find contentment when life becomes overwhelming.
Finding Flow by the Sea: An Athlete's Creative Escape
For professional windsurfer Katya Coelho, happiness emerges from embracing simplicity and self-expression—qualities she believes Goa naturally fosters. "As an athlete, life involves constant highs and lows, rigorous training schedules, competitive pressures, and the weight of representing my country," she explains. Amid this intensity, painting serves as her therapeutic escape. "When I paint, I experience complete freedom to express myself without rules or expectations. Living in Goa enables me to slow down, reconnect with my creativity, and savor the process rather than fixating on outcomes. To me, happiness means freedom, creativity, and using my actions to positively impact and inspire others," Coelho adds.
The True Essence of Susegad: Calm Over Chaos
What makes Goa such a peace-loving state? Many attribute it to the people themselves. Artist, sculptor, and cultural curator Maendra Alvares clarifies the core of susegad, tracing its roots to the Portuguese term sossegado. "The word sossegado describes someone or something that is calm or peaceful. It refers to a state of rest without worries—it absolutely does not mean 'lazy.' This term is frequently misunderstood when associated with Goans. In reality, being content and making the best of your circumstances is what sossegado truly represents," he states.
For Alvares, Goa inherently creates those essential pauses. "I enjoy taking breaks and sitting at the balcao. In Goa, simply observing daily life sparks ideas for me. It functions like a form of meditation," he shares.
A Soundtrack Rooted in Goa: Music as Lifeline
For musician Colin D’Cruz, happiness has always carried a rhythmic quality. "I've remained dedicated to music simply because I feel happiest when playing—whether in my home studio or at gigs across locations," he says. Reflecting on life's fluctuations, he notes, "Music guides me through the lowest moments. Interestingly, it's the deep, low notes I play on my bass guitar that elevate my spirits. Living in Goa brings me happiness. Living in Goa with my beautiful wife, Diana, increases that happiness. And living in Goa with my wife and Pinky, a stray dog who adopted us, brings me the greatest joy of all."
Rooted in Ritual and Routine: Discipline Meets Serenity
For fashion designer Ninoshka Alvares-Delaney, Goa's tranquil environment complements her disciplined lifestyle. "For nearly two decades, yoga has been my constant companion and a profound source of joy. Living in Goa provides the space and stillness necessary to maintain commitment—it has supported me through pregnancy and recovery from injuries," she reveals. Her days begin before sunrise. "I never miss a yoga session. In the quiet of Goa's early mornings, I discover an internal stillness that genuinely fosters happiness," she explains. This routine has become sacred. "It grounds me, sustains my energy, and keeps my heart light. It's my method for staying centered."
Wanderlust with a Goan Heart: Travel and Home in Harmony
For model and entrepreneur Scarlett Rose, happiness may involve global travel, but Goa remains her unwavering anchor. "Travel has always been significant in my life, yet so is my Goan identity. The susegad lifestyle, the rich cultural heritage, and even comforting dishes like fish curry rice remind me of my roots, no matter where I journey. Travel continuously inspires and challenges me, while Goa keeps me grounded with its simplicity and calm. That contrast makes the experience truly fulfilling," she observes.
Checkmate, the Goan Way: Strategic Peace on the Chessboard
Filmmaker Miransha Naik locates his calm in a quieter aspect of Goan life—the chessboard. What started as a college pastime has evolved into his preferred method of unwinding. "In Goa, there's always room to pause," he reflects, adding, "Rather than succumbing to stress, I turn to a game of chess—often in leisurely settings—finding both focus and peace with every strategic move."
These diverse perspectives collectively illustrate that Goa's susegad philosophy transcends mere relaxation; it is a cultivated art of living mindfully, embracing balance, and discovering happiness in life's simple, unhurried moments.
