Governor Anandiben Patel Advocates for Theatre's Expansion to Rural Areas
In a significant address during the sixth day of the Bhartendu Natya Akademi's (BNA) golden jubilee celebrations in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel called for theatre to transcend urban confines and reach villages. She emphasized that art in India is not just a medium of expression but the profound voice of the soul, with theatre, music, and literature historically guiding societal norms.
Theatre as a Mirror of Society and Tool for Social Change
Patel highlighted theatre's unique ability to serve as a mirror of society, playing a crucial role in raising awareness against pervasive social evils such as female foeticide, dowry practices, and substance abuse. She underscored that diverse arts and traditions, inherited from ancestors as priceless heritage, carry a moral and constitutional responsibility for preservation and promotion.
Cultural Performances Enrich Golden Jubilee Celebrations
As part of the jubilee festivities, a compelling play titled 'Rashmirathi' was presented, directed by Manvendra Tripathi and performed by Sanskritic Sangam from Gorakhpur. Based on Ramdhari Singh Dinkar's 1952 poem, the production delved into the life of Karna from the Mahabharata, exploring profound themes of duty, destiny, loyalty, and moral conflict set against the backdrop of war and social hierarchy. The play powerfully conveyed that individuals should be judged by their conduct and deeds rather than lineage or birth circumstances.
Additionally, folk singer Malini Awasthi captivated the audience with her performance of 'Maalan Albeli', featuring songs like 'Railiya Bairan', 'Saiya Mile Ladkaiyan', and 'Kankavva Balyya'. Awasthi shared insights into her journey as a folk artist, recounting the struggles and challenges she faced, including taunts and obstacles. She credited her unwavering courage and passion for keeping her focused on her goals, inspiring attendees with her resilience.
The event underscored the importance of cultural outreach and the transformative power of performing arts in fostering social consciousness and community engagement across both urban and rural landscapes.
