Hubballi's Historic Eid Prayer at Idgah Maidan Faces Disruption Due to Construction
For years, the Idgah Maidan at Channamma Circle in Hubballi has been the vibrant heart of the city's Eid celebrations, hosting a grand public prayer that transcends community boundaries. This annual event has traditionally drawn not only thousands of Muslim worshippers but also numerous non-Muslim elected representatives, officials, and celebrities, symbolizing unity and shared festivity. However, this year, the cherished gathering is poised to lose its customary sheen due to extensive construction work in the area.
Construction Chaos Impacts Festival Preparations
The ongoing flyover construction at Maidan and Channamma Circle has transformed the surroundings into a challenging landscape. Roads are obstructed by heaps of construction materials, creating hazardous conditions that have prompted serious safety concerns. In response, Anjuman-e-Islam, the organizing body, has issued a public appeal urging people to avoid bringing children and senior citizens to the prayer. This precautionary measure highlights the significant risks posed by the current state of the infrastructure.
Altaf Hallur, former general secretary of Hubballi, elaborated on the situation in an interview with TOI. He emphasized that while the Eid prayer remains a moment of pride for the community, the appeal for vulnerable groups to stay away was made strictly in the interest of their safety. "The area has become clumsy for movement, and the incompletion of a multi-level car parking project has further worsened the situation," Hallur stated. He estimated that these factors could lead to a 20-30% reduction in participation compared to previous years.
Administrative Lapses and Future Hopes
Hallur also pointed to a lack of coordination between key departments such as the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) and the Public Works Department (PWD) as a primary cause of the chaos. "Seeing the current disarray, we are considering approaching the authorities to ensure smoother public movement by the next festival at least," he asserted, underscoring the need for better planning and execution.
AM Hindasageri, president of Anjuman-e-Islam, who recently inspected Idgah Maidan, has called on HDMC to maintain cleanliness and undertake temporary repairs to the flooring. Honorary secretary Basheer Ahmed Hallur added that participants might face hurdles in reaching the Maidan on time, as adjacent roads have become unfit for traffic, potentially delaying the prayer proceedings.
Official Responses and Mitigation Efforts
In response to these concerns, HDMC commissioner Rudresh Ghali assured that the Maidan itself has been cleaned and prepared for the mass prayer. "PWD and police are actively working to ensure traffic clearance in the surrounding areas," Ghali added, indicating efforts to mitigate the disruptions. However, these measures may not fully address the broader accessibility and safety issues highlighted by community leaders.
The situation at Idgah Maidan serves as a stark reminder of how infrastructure projects, while essential for development, can inadvertently impact cultural and religious traditions. As Hubballi navigates this challenging Eid season, the hope is for improved coordination and timely completion of works to restore the event's full glory in future years.
