The vibrant pink city of Jaipur is set to come alive with the magic of performing arts as the 14th edition of the Jairangam theatre festival prepares to unfold. Scheduled to be held from December 18 to 21 at the Jawahar Kala Kendra, this year's festival promises a rich tapestry of cultural experiences, marked by significant international collaboration and a heartfelt tribute to a cinematic legend.
A Festival of Firsts: International Flavour and Homage
Breaking new ground, Jairangam 2023 will for the first time ever stage a theatre production all the way from New Zealand. The play, titled "The Girmit" and directed by Samina Zehra, will make its Indian debut during the four-day event, adding a unique cross-cultural dimension to the festival's lineup.
In a parallel celebration of artistry, the festival will also commemorate the birth anniversary of the iconic Bollywood filmmaker and actor, Guru Dutt. A special dastangoi event, named "Dastaan-e-Guru Dutt," will be hosted in memory of the legendary artist, offering audiences a narrative performance that delves into his life and legacy.
Women Take Centre Stage in Curated Lineup
Festival director Mann Gera revealed that this year's edition has been thoughtfully designed with a strong focus on women's creative voices. In a powerful statement, seven out of the total eleven plays scheduled for performance are directed by women theatre directors. This deliberate curation highlights the festival's commitment to showcasing diverse narratives and promoting gender inclusivity in the arts.
The event will kick off on Thursday with a special treat for younger audiences. The inaugural performance will be Makarand Deshpande's play, "Einstein," staged at the Krishnayan Auditorium. Beyond plays, the festival's calendar is packed with musical performances, exhibitions, and several other cultural programmes, ensuring there is something for every art enthusiast.
Exploring Heritage: Walks Through the Heart of Jaipur
Adding an immersive, interactive layer to the festival, Jairangam will introduce heritage walks for the first time in its history. Organisers have curated three distinct routes that promise to reveal the architectural and cultural gems of Jaipur:
- The walk from Gem Cinema to Sanganeri Gate.
- The route from Badi Chaupar to Hawa Mahal.
- The trail from Town Hall to Ram Prakash Theatre.
These guided walks are designed to offer participants deep insights into the city's splendid architecture, vibrant culture, and the rhythm of everyday life in its historic lanes.
With its blend of international theatre, homage to a classic Bollywood genius, a women-driven artistic vision, and new avenues for cultural exploration, the 14th Jairangam festival is poised to be a landmark event in Jaipur's cultural calendar. It stands as a testament to the evolving and inclusive nature of India's performing arts scene.
