Sacred Kalasha Returns to Mahaveer Circle in Mangaluru After Nine-Year Hiatus
In a significant cultural and religious event for Mangaluru, the sacred Kalasha has been reinstalled at Mahaveer Circle, marking its return after nearly nine years of absence. The installation ceremony, held on Saturday, was inaugurated by Shree Kshetra Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari D Veerendra Heggade, who recalled the initial uncertainty surrounding the Kalasha's removal for development works.
Restoration of a Sacred Symbol
D Veerendra Heggade expressed relief and joy at the Kalasha's return, stating, "After nearly nine years, the Kalasha has come back to its rightful place, thanks to the sustained efforts of many." He highlighted that there were initial apprehensions about whether the sacred symbol would ever be restored. Heggade emphasized the spiritual significance of the Kalasha, noting that while there was a proposal to install a statue of Lord Mahaveer at the circle, the decision was ultimately made to restore the Kalasha.
He elaborated on its importance, saying, "The Kalasha is a sacred symbol. With its return to this iconic city junction, I hope it purifies us both internally and externally." He added that the Kalasha should bless everyone passing through the circle, particularly drivers who ferry passengers and shoulder great responsibility, wishing them goodwill and positive thoughts.
Political and Community Support
Assembly speaker UT Khader, who unveiled the plaque for the renovated circle, shared a personal connection to the site. He mentioned that the circle was inaugurated 22 years ago when his father was an MLA, and he was now part of another inauguration. Khader suggested that the Mangaluru Jain society install messages from Lord Mahaveera, such as non-violence, around the circle to inspire passersby.
Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta described the return of the Kalasha as an auspicious sign for Mangaluru. He stated, "The Kalasha should serve as an inspiration for Mangalureans who have moved away in search of better opportunities. It should draw them back to their roots."
Broader Initiatives and Community Contributions
Mangaluru City South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath acknowledged the significant contributions of the Jain community to the city's economy, despite being a small group. He praised their efforts in enhancing Mangaluru's cultural and economic landscape.
In addition to the Kalasha installation, several initiatives are in the pipeline to address traffic congestion in the district. These include a proposed elevated road between Nanthur and Kuloor, aimed at improving transportation infrastructure and easing mobility challenges in the region.
The event underscored the collaborative efforts of religious leaders, politicians, and the community in preserving cultural heritage while promoting urban development. The return of the Kalasha is seen as a milestone in Mangaluru's ongoing journey to balance modernization with spiritual traditions.
