Prime Minister Narendra Modi's diplomatic gesture at the G20 Summit in Johannesburg has cast an international spotlight on a centuries-old craft from Telangana. The gift presented to Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi was a meticulously crafted silver filigree masterpiece originating from Karimnagar, highlighting India's rich heritage of indigenous artistry.
A Legacy Craft Receives Global Recognition
For the approximately 150 families in Karimnagar who sustain this delicate art form, the Prime Minister's mention has ignited immense pride and renewed optimism. Ashok Arroju, president of the Silver Filigree of Karimnagar (SIFKA) Handcrafts Welfare Society, emphasized the craft's uniqueness and the sustained effort behind its preservation. "While the art existed for more than 400 years, it is only in the last three decades that we took a systematic approach to keep it alive by training more people in the skill," Arroju stated.
In his 'Mann Ki Baat' address on November 30, PM Modi elaborated on his commitment to the 'Vocal for Local' initiative through these gifts. "The Prime Minister of Japan was presented with a silver Buddha replica. It showcases the intricacies of the renowned silver crafts of Telangana and Karimnagar," the PM said. He also revealed that Italy's Prime Minister received a silver mirror with floral motifs, another exemplar of the region's traditional metal craftsmanship.
From G20 Summits to Grand Weddings: Demand Soars
This is not the first time Karimnagar's filigree has adorned high-profile global events. During the G20 Summit in Delhi on September 9-10, 2023, world leaders and delegates received over 200 filigree artefacts featuring the G20 logo and pens, along with another 100 pieces on various themes. Ashok Arroju recalled a direct interaction with PM Modi before the summit: "He showed keen interest in the silver filigree. When he expressed a desire that we should make a pen also, we made it."
The craft's rising profile has led to prestigious commissions. Notably, the Ambani family placed an order for 400 filigree artefacts from Karimnagar to gift guests at the upcoming wedding of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant in 2024.
Ensuring a Flourishing Future for the Art
The renewed global attention has infused a sense of pride and urgency among the artisan community in Karimnagar town. With demand escalating, more families are now encouraging every member to learn the intricate skill. This grassroots effort aims to ensure that this 400-year-old legacy does not merely survive but actively flourishes for generations to come. The story of Karimnagar's silver filigree is now a shining example of how global recognition can empower local artisanal communities and preserve invaluable cultural heritage.
