Karnataka Moves Forward with Tuluvas Bhavan Proposal to Empower Tulu Community
In a significant step towards cultural preservation, the Karnataka State Policy and Planning Commission has formally proposed the establishment of dedicated Tuluvas Bhavan facilities in Bengaluru and Udupi. This initiative aims to address the long-standing demand of the Tuluva community for a unified platform to celebrate and sustain their rich heritage.
Proposal Submitted to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah
The proposal has been submitted to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, outlining a comprehensive plan to create vibrant hubs that will serve as focal points for Tulu language, culture, and traditions. Commission member S Mohanadass Hegde, in a letter to the chief minister, emphasized that the Tuluva community, dispersed across coastal districts such as Mangaluru and Udupi, as well as urban centers like Bengaluru, has consistently expressed the need for such a space to foster unity and identity.
Multi-Dimensional Vision for Cultural and Economic Growth
The envisioned Tuluvas Bhavan is designed as a multi-dimensional complex that goes beyond mere cultural preservation. It is set to include:
- Cultural Preservation: Museums, archives, and performance spaces dedicated to Tulu literature, Yakshagana, and other folk arts to safeguard intangible heritage.
- Education and Research: Initiatives such as scholarships, a dedicated Tulu research institute, and incubation centers to support artisans, fisheries, and coastal entrepreneurship, promoting skill development and innovation.
- Community Engagement: Hosting public events, festivals, and civic awareness programs to strengthen social cohesion and serve as a community anchor.
Additionally, an advisory cell has been proposed to liaise with the state government and advocate for the interests of the Tuluva community, ensuring their voices are heard in policy-making.
Phased Implementation and Governance Framework
The proposal details a phased implementation plan, a robust governance framework, and the integration of technology-driven initiatives to position the bhavan as a nationally recognized landmark. Hegde highlighted that if approved, the Tuluvas Bhavan could become a dynamic engine for cultural preservation and socio-economic empowerment, reflecting Karnataka's commitment to inclusivity and regional diversity.
This move is expected to not only preserve the unique Tulu identity but also open new avenues for education, entrepreneurship, and community development, making it a landmark project for the state.
