Codava National Council Marks Kodava New Year Edmyar Ondh with Traditional Festivities and Community Resolutions
The Codava National Council (CNC) enthusiastically celebrated the Kodava New Year, known as Edmyar Ondh, on Tuesday in a vibrant event held at Bettathur near Madikeri. The celebration was not only a cultural festivity but also a platform where several significant resolutions aimed at protecting and advancing the interests of the Kodava community were formally adopted.
Traditional Rituals and Cultural Significance
The festivities commenced with a sacred worship ceremony dedicated to 'Mother Earth,' led by CNC president NU Nachappa. In a symbolic act marking the beginning of the new year for the Kodavas, bullocks were used to plough the surrounding farmland, a ritual deeply rooted in the community's agricultural heritage. Nachappa emphasized that Kodavas follow the solar calendar, and the CNC has been publicly celebrating all folkloric festivals since its inception to actively promote and preserve Kodava culture.
"The Kodavas' unique cultural traditions and practices are truly fascinating," Nachappa stated. "The ritual of ploughing the paddy field by bullocks on the auspicious day of the Codava New Year, Edmyar Ondh, is a profoundly significant event that connects us to our ancestral roots and agricultural legacy."
Key Resolutions for Community Advancement
During the event, the CNC presented a series of resolutions directed at both the state and central governments, highlighting critical demands for the Kodava community. These resolutions underscore the community's aspirations for greater recognition and rights.
- Geo-political autonomy for Kodagu: Advocating for self-governance and administrative independence in the region.
- UNO recognition: Seeking acknowledgment from the United Nations as a micro-ethnic group to enhance global visibility and protection.
- Scheduled Tribe (ST) status: Pushing for official classification as a Scheduled Tribe to access reserved benefits and safeguards.
- Constitutional inclusion: Demanding the inclusion of the Kodava language in the 8th schedule of the Indian Constitution to ensure linguistic preservation and promotion.
- Arms Act exemptions: Insisting on the continuation of sacrosanct status for guns and exemptions from the Arms Act without restrictions, reflecting traditional practices.
- Parliamentary representation: Calling for special representation in Parliament to voice community-specific issues at the national level.
Community Participation and Cultural Promotion
The celebration saw active participation from numerous residents of the Kodava community, who gathered to welcome the New Year with traditional fervor. The event served as a powerful reminder of the CNC's ongoing efforts to foster cultural pride and unity among Kodavas. By publicly celebrating Edmyar Ondh and other folkloric festivals, the organization aims to educate wider audiences about the rich heritage and distinct identity of the Kodava people, ensuring their traditions are passed down to future generations.
This year's Edmyar Ondh celebration not only honored age-old customs but also reinforced the community's collective resolve to secure their rights and recognition in contemporary society. The resolutions passed are expected to form the basis of future advocacy campaigns, as the CNC continues to champion the cause of the Kodava community on both regional and national stages.
