Odia Community in Lucknow Observes Pana Sankranti with Traditional Fervor

Despite being far from their home state, the Odia community in Lucknow came together to celebrate Pana Sankranti, the Odia New Year, with great enthusiasm. The festivities were marked by traditional rituals, festive food, and heartfelt prayers, ensuring their cultural roots remained vibrant and alive in the city.

The Significance of Pana Sankranti and Its Rituals

Pana Sankranti is deeply associated with the preparation of 'pana', a sweet and refreshing drink made from a blend of curd, jaggery, bel fruit, milk, and dry fruits. This traditional beverage symbolizes the arrival of the summer season and is central to the celebrations.

On this auspicious occasion, devotees offered prayers to Lord Jagannath, seeking blessings for good health, peace, and prosperity. Families exchanged warm greetings, offered pana to the deity, and donned cotton clothes to welcome the summer months with comfort and tradition.

Practical and Spiritual Aspects of the Tulsi Ritual

A key ritual during Pana Sankranti involves the worship of the Tulsi plant. Prof D R Sahu, Secretary of the Lucknow Odia Samaj, explained the practical significance behind this tradition. "Tulsi is a very sensitive plant, and its leaves tend to dry up quickly, especially in the summer heat. To keep it fresh, a water-filled pot is placed above the Tulsi with a small hole, allowing drops to fall continuously on the plant. Following this, a puja is performed to honor its spiritual importance," he said.

This ritual not only highlights the community's devotion but also showcases their deep connection to nature and sustainable practices, blending spirituality with everyday wisdom.

Celebrating Cultural Identity Away from Home

The celebration in Lucknow served as a powerful reminder of how diaspora communities maintain their cultural heritage. By organizing such events, the Odia community fosters a sense of belonging and continuity, passing down traditions to younger generations.

  • Preparation and sharing of traditional pana drink
  • Prayers and offerings to Lord Jagannath and Tulsi
  • Wearing of cotton attire to mark seasonal change
  • Community gatherings to strengthen cultural bonds

Through these activities, the Odia community in Lucknow not only celebrated their New Year but also reinforced their identity, demonstrating that cultural roots can thrive anywhere with dedication and collective effort.
