Magh Mela 2026 Begins: Over 4 Lakh Devotees Take Holy Dip on Paush Purnima in Prayagraj
Magh Mela begins at Sangam with holy dip on Paush Purnima

The sacred banks of the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj witnessed a massive influx of spiritual energy as the annual Magh Mela commenced on Saturday, January 3, 2026. Lakhs of devotees braved the chilly winter morning to take a holy dip on the auspicious occasion of Paush Purnima, marking the official beginning of the month-long religious congregation.

A Sea of Devotees at the Confluence

The confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati was a vibrant spectacle of faith. Pilgrims from across the country gathered in large numbers to perform the Paush Purnima bathing rituals, considered highly meritorious in Hindu tradition. Despite the cold wave, the enthusiasm of the devotees remained undiminished as they offered prayers, lit lamps, and floated flowers in the sacred waters.

The visual narrative from the ghats was powerful. Rows of devotees stood waist-deep in water, chanting prayers with folded hands. Sadhus, sants, and Kalpavasi devotees were seen performing elaborate morning rituals near the Sangam area. The atmosphere was thick with devotion, punctuated by the sounds of temple bells and religious hymns.

Commencement of Kalpavas and Mela Arrangements

With Paush Purnima, the significant spiritual practice of Kalpavas also began. Thousands of devotees have commenced their month-long austere stay, living in temporary tents and camps set up along the riverbank. The mela administration has made extensive arrangements to accommodate this pious gathering.

This year, authorities anticipate a significant surge in participation. Over 4 lakh Kalpvasis are expected to observe the rigorous month-long spiritual observances, a notable increase compared to previous editions of the mela. A sprawling tent city has emerged near the Sangam to host these pilgrims for the entire period.

Logistics and Duration of the Sacred Fair

Ensuring smooth and safe proceedings, the local administration and police have deployed substantial personnel along the ghats. Volunteers and police personnel were actively managing the pilgrim movement on the opening day to prevent any untoward incidents.

The Magh Mela will continue until February 15, 2026, concluding on the festival of Mahashivratri. This period is considered especially sacred in the Hindu calendar, attracting pilgrims who believe that bathing in the Sangam during Magh month washes away sins and paves the path to salvation.

The successful and peaceful commencement of the Magh Mela sets the tone for a spiritually charged month in Prayagraj, reinforcing its status as one of the most pivotal centers of faith and cultural heritage in India.
