Mumbai's Historic Mahim Dargah Hosts Annual Viewing of 600-Year-Old Quran
In a deeply revered annual tradition, the iconic Mahim Dargah in Mumbai conducted a special ziyarat, or public viewing, of an extraordinary 600-year-old copy of the Quran on the intervening night of March 18 and 19. This sacred event, held between Wednesday and Thursday, attracted hundreds of devotees who gathered to witness the rare manuscript, which remains in remarkably pristine condition despite its age.
A Masterpiece of Sufi Calligraphy
The Quran was meticulously hand-calligraphed by the 14th-century Sufi saint and renowned scholar, Makhdoom Ali Faqih, also known as Hazrat Pir Makhdoom Ali Mahimi. Remarkably, the ink on the pages appears fresh and vibrant, and the manuscript itself is in excellent shape, a fact that many attribute to divine preservation. Sohail Khandwani, the managing trustee of both the Mahim and Haji Ali Dargahs, emphasized the significance of this artifact, stating, "This Quran is among the prized possessions of the Dargah. On the intervening night of the 28th and 29th of Ramzan, we hold the public viewing of this rare gem. This has been over a century-old tradition."
Centuries-Old Tradition Draws Devotees
The annual viewing saw a diverse crowd of men and women, joined by trustees including Khandwani's son, Mohammed Ali. Sabir Sayed, director of operations at the Mahim Dargah Trust, shared the emotional impact of the event, saying, "It gave us goosebumps as we came near the holy book. It is a miracle that the copy is in such a good condition and the ink looks so fresh." This reaction underscores the deep spiritual connection felt by attendees, who view the manuscript as a living testament to Islamic heritage and devotion.
Legacy of Makhdoom Ali Mahimi
Makhdoom Ali Mahimi was not only a saint but also a leading scholar of his era, authoring several influential works, including a highly acclaimed commentary on the Quran. His legacy continues to inspire, with the Mahim Dargah drawing lakhs of visitors annually. The site is also famous for the annual Mahim Mela, held in honor of the saint, where the first sandal offering—comprising flowers, sandalwood paste, and a shawl—is traditionally presented by the Mumbai police.
Preservation and Digitalization Efforts
In efforts to safeguard this invaluable cultural treasure, a microfilm copy has already been prepared, and a digitalized version of the Quran is currently in development. This initiative aims to ensure that future generations can access and study the manuscript, preserving its historical and religious significance for years to come.
The Mahim Dargah's annual ziyarat serves as a powerful reminder of Mumbai's rich Islamic traditions, blending spirituality, history, and community in a celebration that has endured for more than a century.
