Nagpur's Historic Bhonsla Royal Procession to Commemorate 301 Years on Ram Navami
Marking an impressive 301 years of unwavering tradition, the historic Nagpurkar Bhonsla royal procession is set to once again grace the streets of Nagpur. This grand event will unfold on the auspicious occasion of Ram Navami, falling on March 26, drawing countless devotees to a ritual deeply embedded in the very foundations of the Bhonsla reign in the region.
A Tradition Born from Divine Vision in 1725
The origins of this sacred procession trace back to the year 1725, a pivotal moment in local history. According to revered historical accounts, Shrimant Raje Raghuji Maharaj Bhonsle (I) experienced a profound divine vision of Lord Ram. In this vision, the ruler dreamt of idols of Lord Ram submerged in the Sur river and was spiritually guided to retrieve them.
Following this divine instruction, the idols were recovered and ceremoniously installed at the Ramtek fort temple. This event is widely regarded as a significant spiritual milestone that preceded the formal establishment of Bhonsla rule in Nagpur. Since that fateful year, Lord Ram has been revered as the kuldaivat or family deity of the Bhonsla dynasty.
The Annual Ram Navami Procession and Its Route
Held annually on Ram Navami, the procession represents the culmination of nine-day festivities that commence with Gudi Padwa. The centerpiece of the event is a traditional 'palkhi' or palanquin, which carries sacred idols of Lord Ram and Lord Hanuman. This palkhi is borne aloft by devoted followers through key localities of Nagpur's old city.
This year, the procession is scheduled to commence at 4:00 PM from the Senior Bhonsla Palace located in the Mahal area. The planned route will pass through several historic landmarks:
- Kotwali Chowk
- Badkas Chowk
- Chitar Oli
- Gandhi Putla on Central Avenue
The procession will then return via the same route, creating a circular path through the heart of the city.
Special Celebrations for the 301-Year Milestone
To honor the significant 301-year milestone, a special welcome ceremony has been meticulously planned at Gandhi Putla on Central Avenue. This ceremony will be organized by the Sarang Cultural Foundation, which has been orchestrating this welcome for an impressive 22 consecutive years.
The foundation's program will include traditional rituals and prayers, adding to the spiritual ambiance of the occasion. Distinguished descendants of the Bhonsla royal family are expected to grace the event with their presence. Notable attendees will include:
- Shrimant Raje Raghujirao Bhonsale (V)
- Shrimant Raje Mudhoji Bhonsale (III)
- Shrimant Jaising Raje Bhonsale
These royal descendants will be specially honored and feted during the celebrations, connecting the present event directly to its historical roots.
Additional Festivities and Arrangements
Organizers have planned a series of additional festivities to enhance the celebratory atmosphere. A spectacular fireworks display is scheduled, promising to light up the evening sky. Furthermore, the distribution of prasad or blessed offerings will be conducted for devotees participating in the event.
To ensure smooth proceedings and manage the anticipated large turnout, volunteers will be strategically deployed along the entire procession route. Their presence will help maintain order and facilitate the safe and respectful observance of this centuries-old tradition, allowing devotees to fully immerse themselves in the spiritual and historical significance of the occasion.
