Nagpur's Orange City Craft Mela & Folk Dance Festival Opens with Vibrant Cultural Showcase
The South Central Zone Cultural Centre (SCZCC) campus in Nagpur transformed into a vibrant cultural hub on Friday evening as the 32nd Orange City Craft Mela and Folk Dance Festival commenced with great enthusiasm. The air filled with rhythmic drumbeats, the delicate chime of ghungroos, and a spectacular burst of colors, marking the beginning of a 10-day celebration of India's rich artistic heritage.
A Grand Inaugural Evening of Traditional Performances
The inaugural evening captivated the audience with a diverse array of folk dance performances from across the country. The program featured the vigorous and energetic Gargalu dance from Andhra Pradesh, the graceful and spiritually significant Lai Haraoba of Manipur, and the lively Ghode Modni performance from Goa. Each presentation transported spectators on a cultural journey through different states, with synchronized costume swirls, live percussion music, and traditional storytelling elements earning enthusiastic applause.
Extensive Craft Exhibition and Artisan Interaction
Beyond the stage performances, the festival grounds presented a festive atmosphere with numerous craft stalls displaying regional specialties. Visitors can explore and purchase handloom textiles, intricately embroidered garments, traditional pottery, metal artefacts, jewellery, carpets, leather goods, and various decorative handicrafts. Artisans from different regions engage directly with visitors, transforming the fair into both a marketplace and a platform for live cultural exchange.
Official Inauguration and Festival Details
SCZCC officials including director Aastha Karlekar formally welcomed participating artists and emphasized the festival's crucial role in bringing traditional art forms closer to urban audiences. This year's edition features participation from over 150 skilled artisans and more than 300 folk and tribal artists, making it one of the most comprehensive cultural events in the region.
The festival will run daily until April 5, with the craft mela opening at 2pm each day and cultural performances beginning at 6.30pm. Organizers have set an affordable entry fee of ₹30 and anticipate strong footfall throughout the event duration.
