Navratri Commences in Ludhiana with Devotees Undeterred by Rain
On Thursday, rain showers in Ludhiana failed to dampen the fervor of devotees who gathered at temples across the city to celebrate the first day of Navratri and the beginning of the new year according to the old Hindu calendar. The week-long festival, dedicated to Goddess Durga, saw a vibrant start despite the wet weather, with temples beautifully decorated in advance and special arrangements made to welcome the faithful.
Temples Adorned and Crowds Gather for Auspicious Rituals
Temples throughout Ludhiana were adorned with lights and flowers, creating a festive atmosphere. At the Durga Mata Mandir near Jagraon bridge, where the nine forms of Goddess Durga are worshipped, large crowds assembled as usual. Simultaneously, devotees gathered at Shree Geeta Mandir to participate in the lighting of 108 Akhand Jyotis, a symbolic ritual of continuous light representing purity and devotion.
Navratri Celebrations: Fasting, Feasting, and New Beginnings
The Navratri celebrations in Ludhiana feature a blend of fasting and feasting. Many devotees observe fasts throughout the week, while also preparing traditional delicacies characteristic of these nine days. This practice is seen as both a spiritual discipline and a way to cleanse the body and mind.
Residents of Ludhiana consider the first day of Navratri one of the most auspicious days in the Hindu calendar, often choosing it to initiate new ventures. Sanju Sharma, a city resident, explained, "It is the beginning of the New Year according to the Hindu calendar, so there could not be any other day for the inauguration of new work." He added that he had been waiting for a suitable day to open his new shop and found the first day of Navratri perfect for this purpose.
Personal Devotions and Spiritual Significance
Another devotee, Preeti Verma from Gurdev Nagar, shared her commitment to observing fasts all week and worshipping Goddess Durga. She emphasized that this practice is not merely a religious belief but also aids in cleansing the entire system, promoting physical and mental well-being.
The enthusiasm among devotees highlights the cultural and spiritual significance of Navratri in Ludhiana, as people embrace the festival for its religious traditions and as a time for personal renewal and new beginnings.
