Odisha Launches Grand 14-Day Odia Pakhya Festival to Reconnect with Cultural Roots
In a significant move to reconnect citizens with the state's profound cultural heritage and time-honored traditions, the Odisha government has announced a grand 14-day celebration called Odia Pakhya. Culture Minister Suryabanshi Suraj made the official announcement on Monday, detailing an extensive program that will run from Utkal Divas on April 1 through to the Odia New Year on April 14.
A Collective Celebration of Language, Literature, and Lifestyle
The festival, which was formally added to the state's official cultural calendar last year, is designed as a comprehensive and collective celebration of Odisha's unique identity. Minister Suraj emphasized that Odia Pakhya will spotlight the state's rich language, vibrant literature, diverse culinary traditions, exquisite handloom textiles, and distinctive lifestyle practices.
The celebration will commence with Utkal Divas, marking the foundation day of the state. This will be immediately followed by 'Khadi Chuan' on April 2, a special initiative focused on the school enrolment of young children, fostering early education connections. On April 3, 'Ama Poshak Ama Parichaya Day' will be observed to actively promote and celebrate traditional Odia attire, encouraging citizens to wear and appreciate their native clothing.
Heritage Awareness, Fitness, and Community Initiatives
An awareness rally titled the 'Odia Nameplate Campaign' is scheduled for April 4. This campaign aims to encourage businesses and households to use the Odia language on signboards and nameplates, reinforcing linguistic pride. The following day, April 5, will feature 'Heritage Runs' organized near historical sites across the state. These runs are designed to dual promote physical fitness and heightened awareness of Odisha's archaeological and historical treasures.
The festival's agenda includes a statewide cleanliness drive targeting temples and public spaces, ensuring these cultural and communal areas are maintained with respect. Additional cultural and social initiatives are planned throughout the fortnight, including Shishu Katha Divas for children's storytelling, organized blood donation drives to support community health, and a book-buying campaign to foster literacy and support local authors and publishers.
Digital Engagement and Concluding Celebrations
To maximize public participation and engagement, the Odisha government has launched a dedicated website and a mobile application for the Odia Pakhya festival. Minister Suraj highlighted that these digital platforms will facilitate online activities, event registrations, and real-time updates, allowing citizens to engage with the festival from anywhere.
The grand festival will culminate on April 14 with vibrant celebrations of the Odia New Year, bringing together communities to welcome the new year with traditional fervor and joy. This structured 14-day event underscores the state's commitment to preserving and promoting its cultural legacy while adapting to modern digital tools for wider outreach and participation.
