Patna Embraces Ramzan with Vibrant Market Activity and Spiritual Preparations

The onset of the holy month of Ramzan has infused the streets of Patna, particularly in areas like Sabzibagh, with a palpable energy and fervor. As Thursday marked the first day of fasting, or roza, the city witnessed a significant surge in activity, with preparations that began a week ago now reaching full momentum. Streets are buzzing with life, and stalls are operating round the clock to cater to the needs of shoppers preparing for this sacred observance.

Bakeries and Shops Scale Up to Meet Soaring Demand

Local bakeries and shops have ramped up their operations to handle the spike in demand for traditional Ramzan delicacies. Fresh bakarkhanis, biscuits, and lachchas are prominently displayed, with bakeries hiring extra workers to keep up. Samiul Ahmed, a bakery owner, highlighted the high demand, noting that naans are priced between Rs 50 and Rs 200, while bakarkhani costs range from Rs 25 to Rs 250. The variety of goods on offer extends beyond food, with stalls showcasing piles of sewai (vermicelli), tasbeeh (prayer beads), aromatic itrs, topis, headscarves, and new kurta-pyjamas, all reflecting the community's readiness for the month-long spiritual journey.

Dry Fruits and Fruits See Rapid Sales During Ramzan

In the dry fruit aisles, vendors are experiencing rapid sales of date varieties sourced from across the Middle East. Mohd Asim, a dry fruit vendor, reported that varieties like Ajwa, Kimia, Burni, Medjool, and Mazafati are in high demand and flying off the shelves. Prices for these dates range from Rs 100 to Rs 1,500 per kg, with Ajwa being the most sought-after due to its religious significance. Fruit vendors are also enjoying brisk business, with seasonal items seeing increased demand. Apples are selling for Rs 150-220 per kg, pomegranates for Rs 140-250 per kg, and bananas for Rs 40-60 per dozen. Watermelons, essential for iftar meals, are priced at Rs 25-40 per kg. Mohd Wasi Khan, a fruit vendor, noted a rise in footfall and booming sales during this period.

Spiritual Reflection and Community Engagement in Ramzan

The spiritual essence of Ramzan is deeply felt among residents, with many engaging in prayers and reflection. Ayesha Khan, a resident of Alamganj, shared her preparations, including purchasing roohafzah, and emphasized that this month is a time of devotion, where devotees fast from dawn to dusk, refraining from food and water while focusing on spiritual growth. The city is also witnessing increased activity with large numbers attending Taraweeh, or night prayers, at local mosques. Maulana Mohd Alam Quasmi underscored the significance of Ramzan, stating that it signifies growth and prosperity, with fasting not only holding holy importance but also detoxifying the body. He urged people to indulge in charity during this month and help the poor, reinforcing the community spirit that defines Ramzan in Patna.
