Patna Zoo Transforms Lake into Sacred Space for Chaiti Chhath Celebrations
In preparation for the upcoming Chaiti Chhath festival, authorities in Patna have intensified their efforts to create accessible and safe venues for devotees. Special arrangements are being implemented at multiple locations across the city, with the Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park, commonly known as Patna Zoo, emerging as a key alternative for those unable to reach the traditional Ganga ghats.
Comprehensive Lake Preparation and Water Treatment
Officials have initiated a thorough cleaning and preparation process for the zoo's lake. The water body is being treated with a mixture of lime and alum to purify it, followed by the addition of sacred Ganga water post-cleaning. This meticulous approach ensures the lake meets the religious requirements for Chhath rituals.
Temporary infrastructure is being constructed, including makeshift ghats to facilitate the rituals. The Patna Municipal Corporation is actively involved in setting up essential facilities, with bathrooms and changing rooms undergoing deep cleaning. Barricading is being installed to manage crowd flow and maintain order during the festivities.
Enhanced Safety Protocols for Devotees and Animals
Safety remains a paramount concern, particularly in areas with strong water currents. These hazardous zones will be clearly marked with red cloth barriers to alert devotees and prevent accidents. An official from the zoo elaborated on the preparations, stating, "Lime and alum are being mixed to clean the lake water. After the cleaning, Ganga jal will be poured into the lake. On the side where the water flow is higher posing danger for the devotees, a red cloth barrier will be put up."
The zoo administration has also devised a schedule to accommodate devotees while prioritizing animal welfare. Free entry will be granted after 2 PM on March 24 (Tuesday), and the zoo will reopen early at 3 AM on March 25 (Wednesday) to cater to the ritual timings.
Animal Protection and Visitor Management Strategies
During Chhath celebrations at Patna Zoo, the primary focus will be on safeguarding the animals from disturbance. Special measures include tying green nets in front of cages to prevent visitors from wandering too close and ensuring the animals' habitats remain tranquil. The official emphasized, "Care will also be taken to ensure that visitors do not wander around the cages. For this, green nets will be tied in front of the cages."
Additionally, the existing prohibition on bringing plastic inside the zoo premises will be strictly enforced to maintain cleanliness and protect the environment. These combined efforts aim to provide a serene and secure environment for both devotees and the zoo's inhabitants, blending religious observance with responsible wildlife management.
