Patna's Christian Community Observes Palm Sunday with Solemn Celebrations
In Patna, the Christian community came together on Sunday to observe Palm Sunday, a significant religious event that commemorates Jesus Christ's triumphal entry into Jerusalem and heralds the beginning of Holy Week. The day was marked by heartfelt hymns, solemn processions, and special Masses held at various churches throughout the city, drawing thousands of devotees in a display of faith and devotion.
Grand Processions and Hymns Echo Across the City
Devotees carried palm leaves as they participated in processions, recreating the Biblical event where people welcomed Jesus with palm branches, showering praises. At St Joseph Pro-Cathedral Church on Ashok Rajpath, Most Reverend Sebastian Kallapura, Archbishop of Patna, presided over the Palm Sunday service. The church campus resonated with hymns, including the powerful "Hosanna in the highest," as worshippers entered the premises holding palm leaves in their hands, symbolizing peace and victory.
A grand procession commenced from St Michael's Primary School at 5:30 am and concluded at Queen of Apostles Church in Kurji, with over 5,000 devotees actively participating. They sang devotional songs and offered prayers, creating a spiritually uplifting atmosphere. Fr Josie Mathias SJ presided over the event and conducted the Holy Mass, delivering a message that encouraged devotees to embrace humility, sacrifice, and service, as exemplified in the life of Jesus Christ.
Emphasis on Humility and Spiritual Reflection
In his address, Fr Josie Mathias SJ emphasised that Palm Sunday teaches people that true honour and glory come not from external splendour, but from humility and complete submission to God's will. The entire event was meticulously organised under the leadership of the Parish Priest of Kurji Church, Fr Selvin Xavier SJ, with Victor Francis and Nisha Vichar highlighting the religious and historical importance of the day to the congregation.
At Padri Ki Haveli in Patna City, around 300 devotees took part in a procession led by the Parish Priest Fr Joachim Ekka, OFM Cap, which went from Mother Teresa House to the church premises. They offered prayers and re-enacted Jesus' entry into Jerusalem with blessed palm branches. Fr Joachim explained, "A procession with blessed palm branches re-enacts Jesus' entry into Jerusalem. During the prayer service, the Gospel account of Jesus' Passion is read, highlighting his suffering and sacrifice. These traditions help the faithful reflect on Jesus' sacrifice and prepare for Easter."
