PM Modi Inaugurates Samrat Samprati Museum, Spotlighting Jain Heritage and Values

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Samrat Samprati Museum in Gandhinagar on March 31, 2026, marking a significant initiative to promote and preserve Jain heritage as part of India's broader cultural and civilizational legacy. The museum is dedicated to Jain philosophy and core values, including non-violence (ahimsa), compassion, and ethical living, highlighting their enduring relevance in shaping both Indian society and global thought.

Historical Significance and Rich Collection

Named after Samrat Samprati, a historical ruler known for spreading Jainism and promoting peace across his empire, the museum symbolizes the rich history of this ancient tradition. It houses an impressive collection of more than 2,000 rare artefacts, such as:

  • Ancient manuscripts detailing Jain teachings and scriptures
  • Intricately crafted sculptures depicting Jain Tirthankaras and deities
  • Historical coins and paintings that offer insights into artistic traditions

This diverse array provides visitors with a detailed and immersive look into the artistic and historical depth of Jain culture.

Modern Museum Experience and Gyan Bharatam Mission

Spread across seven galleries, the museum integrates traditional heritage displays with modern audio-visual technology, creating an interactive learning environment suitable for visitors of all age groups. During the inauguration, PM Modi also highlighted the Gyan Bharatam Mission, a government initiative focused on digitizing and scientifically preserving ancient manuscripts through advanced techniques like high-resolution scanning and chemical conservation methods.

He pointed out that in the past, many valuable manuscripts were neglected and not properly preserved, emphasizing that the current administration is actively working to correct these shortcomings and protect India's intellectual heritage. Modi recalled the loss of knowledge from ancient institutions such as Nalanda and Takshashila, where vast manuscript collections were destroyed during invasions.

Overcoming Colonial Mindset and Spiritual Interactions

In his speech, the Prime Minister further stated that even after independence, the preservation of such heritage did not receive adequate attention due to a colonial mindset. He stressed the urgent need to revive and value India's traditional knowledge systems, moving beyond historical neglect. Additionally, PM Modi met and sought the blessings of Jain Acharya Shri Padmasagar Surishwar during the event, expressing deep respect for his spiritual guidance and acknowledging the crucial role of Jain saints in preserving cultural and ethical traditions.

This inauguration not only celebrates Jain values but also underscores a broader commitment to safeguarding India's diverse cultural assets for future generations.
