Pune's 'Sahib, Sindh, Sultan' Show Transforms Theatre into Deccan Queen Train Journey
Audiences in Pune are set for a unique theatrical experience that promises to transport them aboard the legendary Deccan Queen train, rather than keeping them seated before a conventional stage. The interactive poetry and music production, titled 'Sahib, Sindh, Sultan,' will unfold at the Kalachhaya Cultural Centre on SB Road on April 11, offering a blend of storytelling, performance, and sensory immersion.
An Infotainment Programme Blending Art and Travel
Directed by Vaidehi Sancheti, the show is described as an "infotainment programme" that aims to recreate the essence of train travel through innovative theatrical techniques. In collaboration with We The Artists, The Theatre India Company seeks to encourage audiences to re-examine the familiar experience of train journeys, often overlooked in daily life.
The performance is structured as a journey, with a narrator guiding the audience into a train coupe and introducing them to a diverse group of co-passengers. What starts as casual dialogue quickly evolves into immersive theatre, making spectators active participants in the narrative.
Four Personalities and Historical Insights
At the core of the show are four distinct characters, each representing different responses to the journey:
- An enthusiastic rail expert
- A curious listener
- An indifferent passenger
- A perspective-shifting traveler
Through their interactions, the production weaves in fragments of railway history, trivia, and personal memories, culminating in a reveal of the show's title significance. The Deccan Queen, a daily train connecting Pune and Mumbai, serves as both the setting and a central character, evoking nostalgia with its sounds, smells, and scenic routes through the Western Ghats.
Tracing Railway Roots and Personal Inspiration
The narrative delves into the origins of Indian railways, dating back to 1853 when the first passenger train ran between Bori Bunder (now Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in Mumbai) and Thane. This historical context is seamlessly integrated with poetry and music, enhancing the storytelling experience.
Sancheti's personal affinity for trains heavily influences the show. "I am a major train fan," she shares, recalling how affordable rail travel shaped her childhood adventures. "There is something romantic about meeting strangers, sharing food, and even the thrill of passing through routes once known for dacoity. Everything felt like an adventure."
Sensory Design and Dramatic Presentation
To enhance the immersive quality, the production employs sophisticated sound and light design, presenting the show in a dramatic reading format. This approach aims to recreate the excitement and ambiance of a train adventure within the confines of a theatre, making it a must-see event for culture enthusiasts in Pune.
